ideas for mounting switches was created by Topper
I'm looking for some ideas about how/where to mount an auxiliary switch or two. This is for a '79 KZ750 but I'd be interested in seeing just about anything.

Got some ideas for me?

I have been toying with the idea of police bike controls gives you extra switches not sur how the internals are but i am sure can be adapted if not a direct wire. the siren and auxillary lights are made in.

but adding extra quote togel switches, havent seen any i liked yet

If there's space on the handlebars, some of the rubber insulated cable clamps that fit the bars, might be able to hold/mount an Aluminum plate for the switch or switches to install in.

Something like this:

The cable clamps are a pretty good idea. I don't know about a plate though. That'll leave the back of the switches exposed. Maybe I could mount a small project box that way.

Got any pics of the police controls?

If you use vapor resistant Mil-Spec switches, the only exposure will be at the terminal connections as the rest of the switch is protected.

If possible, do not solder any switch connections,as the solder will "Wick" up inside the wire insulation, making it prone to break from vibration. It's btter to crimp on terminal ends using the correct tools:

Is it OK to have that exposure at the terminal? Seems like that would be a bad idea.

You can use a heat shrink tube to protect the terminal. Use a lighter or a heat gun on low and it shrinks up and protects the connection.

Or use some dielectric grease on the terminals like on a battery. Those mil-spec switches shouldn't give you an issue with exposure, but you want to protect them from shorting against the bars or each other.

there should be a few bikes out there with extra buttons on the controls to choose from. i know my buddies triumph (sold in canada) has an extra button on the left side. its some sort of a hi beem passing thing that is common in europe i think. also, some bikes have an emergancy flasher button.

You could overcoat the electrical terminals with clear or black silicone sealant, protecting them away from moisture, but still allow esay removal. Just don't use the adhesive/sealant type as it sets up almost permanent.

Another place to mount the switch or switches, would be to drill & tap the handlebar clamps for 10-32 threads and then use spacers between the switch mounting plate for installation(allow for switch and wiring clearances).

www.smallparts.com/hsta-10-24-anodized-a...f_=goo_pf_B000GOMJPY Use a 10-32 long setscrew with #262 RED Loctite as a male part to thread into the threaded spacer.

Oh I'm familiar with heat shrink tubing. It just doesn't look like it would cover several of the terminals in the switches recommended. I think I've struck on an idea though. I've seen some stuff at the hardware store that is "liquid electrical tape". You paint it on like nail polish. I bet that would work.

Some Flush mount rockers would fit in your side panels (as long as you don't mind drilling holes in them). Some of the chopper guys like clean bars, so they mount a 3-way toggle switch in the back of the headlight bucket to run their lights. So that is a spot for an extra switch.

What are you adding? Oil slick? Machine guns? Ejector seat? NEON?
