How to make tach work on FrankenZ ?! was created by badrhino
Sooo I have a 1980 KZ1000 with a J motor with 1100 heads on it.  :silly:  :woohoo: I know....wtf? Right? LOL

So How can I go about getting a tach to work on this bike. I believe it has the original tach and correct me if I'm wrong but those are mechanical tachs and the J mtor/1100 heads need electronic tach. What do I have to do get a J model tach or is there another way?

No tach drive hole in the head, otherwise you could've put the CSR cam in with a drive. But electric would be the way to go. The LTD and the Sport touring A1&2 had the electric tach and speedo. If you want dimensions and pictures I could get that in the morning for you. That would give you a bit on the mounting, which I know is different than the Mechanical, and what warning lights are there and what it looks like. It has the right turn, High beam Indicator and the headlamp warning in the tach.

Yeah I searched on e-bay and looked at a few. I just don't think a newer tach would look right on there as the older ones were a little bit longer and shaped different. I love the looks of the older style ones. Crap!

You could open one of the old ones and put the electric in the early housing. Could get an aftermarket thats close as well, maybe. Aftermarket juts in the early housing. Several options, like ordering off of a menu.

anyway what about just leaving your tach on there just for looks and mounting a shift light on there between your gauges to tell ya when to shift? B)

Shift light could be a possibility, but replacing internals with electronic ones would also be sweat.

Not sure if you're looking to update, but when I had issues with my tach and speedo a while back, I upgraded to an Acewell computer. This picks up tach signal off of your pickup wire to the coils, also has speedo, odometer, 2 tripometers, plenty of extra goodies, and all the indicator lights. I love mine!

I saw someplace a replacement Tack that is electronic, no cable, looks like original. Try looking at Redline. Was considering getting one for mine.
