I spent a couple of decades designing electronic hardware for the various types of rechargeable batteries: NI-CAD, NI-MH, Lead Acid, and Lithium. What I remember about Lithium is they are not nearly as "forgiving" as lead acid for variations in charge voltage. In other words, a lead acid is tolerant of system voltage varying from 13.5 - 14.5V, Li really need a much tighter control on system voltage or it will under/over charge severely. Both Sony and Sanyo required we give them not worse than 1% tolerance on charge voltage for the parts we made for them.

Lithium batteries were also very restrictive in their operating temp range for getting good performance.

It's possible some miracle discoveries have happened in the last few years in Li technology, but I would not use an Li battery on my bike for primary power for the system. Li does give the best power/weight ratio, and they are using them in new electric vehicles, but IMHO good performance would require a better voltage regulator system than what exists on most bikes (hence I don't think they are a good "drop in" solution). YMMV

Lithium Ferrous batteries seem to work well in streetbikes, three friends have put them in this season - one in a Z1 and 2 X ZX14's, all with charging systems. I have 2 set up in a dead loss/no charging 24 volt to start / 12 volt to run system on my dragbike. Powerful little bastards, very fast to recharge with no special charger required- just a warning not to exceed the battery amp hours rate with the charge rate, I just use the 2amp setting. www.turntechbattery.com supplied the units we use.

Lithium Polymer that's whole nother story. Special chargers, danger of explosions etc. Dan Rudd at MPS had their new Pro Mod burn up last month when the LiPO batteries exploded due to incorrect charging procedures.

Just my .02, ymmv.

Thanks for your input bountyhunter, I would rather go with an AGM battery but I dont know if I can find one small enough with the power to crank 1000cc's. How much is enough cold cranking amps for one of these bikes? What is the minimum? I dont have an amp meter or I would try and see what kind of current we are talking about. Hopefully someone on here has done this before.

I think the recommeded specs are
210 CCA
18 AH
12v

I think these bikes charge at 20A if I read correctly. Is there any difference between the police bikes charging systems and the LTD? I know some police bikes require two batteries and 20 AH
