wow..wondering... was created by markthink
Seeking guidance, and appreciation in advance. Bike is an '83 KZ1100 LTD shaft drive (would that be a "KZ1100L?"). Anyhew, she sat since 2000 with minor mechanical updates and polish so she'd stay fresh in the garage. Meat of the matter: I've read warning type stuff on resistor caps, wires, igntion: age, matching, etc. Going for a week long trip: other stuff (brakes, fluids, shocks, carbs..) being set, I have this thing about '83 wires and coils. Even though bike has only 5700 miles, this stuff sat and my brain says "at least wires." Presently the bike appears to have a pair each of resistor 90 degree and 45 degree caps on OEM wires.
So, on a Super Short Budget (caps intentional), do you folks think I can go wires and plugs alone, or best I get into the long dollar of a full setup to be Certain? If the former, or the latter, what best would match OE? Say, resistor wires versus the cap and wire thing, the whole enchilada as a bundle...?
For background, everything about the machine is clean and original; she starts and idles smooth, ran on the trailer nicely. So lacking in KZ experience, I ask for your thoughts.

Put some miles on her now and find out if the equipment is really up to par.
You can always purchase some cheap coils/wires/plugs and take them wwith you to be sure, but I've seen the old equipment run a long, long time.
Good luck.

Take it from me cuz I found
If you leave it then somebody else is bound,
To find that treasure, that moment of pleasure,
When yours, it could have been.

If nothing other than age and chatter makes you nervous and the bike is running good I'd say the same thing. Run through a tankful of gas and if she displays no bad intentions...take her to the prom. You could spend the wad on one thing and have another leap out at you.

Fresh oil, a new set of sparkplugs properly gapped & hit the road!
I'm using Denso W24-ESu's as Ive had more than a few NGK's fail right out of the box. If you can't find Denso's, Accel #116 are almost the same plug.

If the bike has not been abused and has been kept covered and/or garaged the wires & caps should be ok. I think most that have problems have been subjected to the elements 24x7x52x30
