Hi! I put the 3ohm coils on my 82 kz and the kit also came with the stator plate. Do I need to install that to or can I keep the stock plate on it.

Wrong coils for that year bike. The green coils are intended for either points or the dyna electronic ignition. The Kawasaki electronic ignition is 2.2 Ohm and requires the Gray coils. The green coils will work but will give a 30% weaker spark. I am not quite sure what you mean when you say "stator plate"

Funny, I've checked the ohm's on the old ignition coils that came with my 1982 GPz1100 B2(both sets as I bought spares when I bought the bike) and all 4 check at 3 ohm. Maybe the FI has a different dwell requirement?

Coils for those bikes should read between 1.8-2.8 Ohms. In the early Kaw IC ignitions, the only exception to the 2.2 Ohm rule is the KZ1300/ZN1300. They are 3 Ohm. The EFI GPZ bikes were no different even though they had electronic advance. As the coils get older the resistance goes up in them. I had some 1300 coils that measured as much as 7 Ohms.

Another question, My 82 still has the mechanical advance, I think the 83's went to the electronic advancers..

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationYes that is correct. The ECU units are however retro active but not the other way around. Thank god you do not have the 81, they were terrible. from 82 on they worked quite well. I think the 82 was the best balance of injection with simplicity. But they should ALL have 2.2 Ohm coils. from Dyna they are Gray.

I've got the green 3 ohms on now but I'll consider going to the 2.2 ohm ones in the future. I have not fired it up yet as I'm doing some wiring upgrades and changing some of the open backed connectors to the Weather Pack style used in the newer cars.

As I mentioned, the 3 Ohm will work but it is a poor spark. I have my gap open to .060 on my plugs you will have to be at about .020 with the green coils. Once I install my MSD MC-2 Ignition I am going to .7 OHM coils and a .080 gap.

Another thing I did is to make up two shorter cables going to the ignition coils using Weather Pack connectors. The stock ignition coils had 1/4" wide male push on terminations, but the Dyna coils have screw terminations. The Dyna coils come with 10-32 X 5/16" screws in the kit, so don't loose them as replacement screws may be too long and will bottom out before being tight.

With the shorter cables, I can now easily remove the coils when doing valve adjustment rather than wearing out the screw terminations on the coils. I Just release the connector lock, and pull the connectors apart. I reversed one male/female conector pair so it's almost impossible to connect the ignition coils up wrong.

Post an appropriated Avatar. I once made the same mistake about the coils when I first got into the "J" bikes I wondered why my bike got such poor gas millage and why it started missing at 6500+ revs. Than I figured it out and solved all problems.
