If there's a convenient motorcycle dealership nearby, especially a Kawasaki dealership, they might have a Kawasaki Coil Tester available to test the existing coils, especially the suspect coil.
The tester is superior to an ohm check, because it measures the actual spark intensity produced by the coil.
Likely would be no charge for the test (in hopes of selling a new coil at stealership prices).
If it passes the test, Hooray.
If it fails
, thank them and get price of a new coil :pinch: , but don't purchase.
Shop around, and likely confirm Z1E as best source.
If going to Dyna-S ignition, Z1E lists the Green green 3 ohm coil recommended by Dyna for using with Dyna-S, and Z1E also lists a less expensive coil that is reportedly equally suitable for using with Dyna-S.
Good Fortune!

O yeah, there is also that option. If you go to the Dyna S, you can use the much cheaper 4-ohm Emgo coils. They are originally for points ignitions, but since the Dyna S dwell is so long, they work with the Dyna S too.
Used Ebay coils may just put you into the same boat you're in now. It's a gamble, but may be worth it if you get lucky and the coils are good. But I wouldn't travel very far from home on those coils. That link you gave is not worth a gamble, see my next post.

I wouldn't bid. The 1980 KZ550 A had points and so those coils could be 4-ohm.
The 1980 KZ550 C should be 2.3-ohm, but he dosn't say which model they are from.
so we are agreed then that the one coil is trash? if i do go dyna s n future it will b a while. im just trying to keep my build as cheap as possible to have a good rideable bike, then upgrade as i go, but would really like to have something to ride, lol, and my goal for it is 1k end result...hardtail tank and all.
what bout these???

When I put the green 3 ohm coils on my bike, I used brush on Glyptol(Glyptal) to prevent the iron laminations from rusting. Most good electrical/electronic supply places sell it in a small bottle.
When installing your new coils, check for grounding problems as some bike's mounting hardware is close to the terminals.
The Dyna coils use a ring lug to provide the connections on the primary side. Try not to loose the 10-32 X 5/16" screws as others may bottom out before the terminals are tight.
I'd suggest using a lock washer and flat washer on the primary wires for vibration protection.

As long as you're careful in using the Blue #242 Loctite(not the Red type as it needs about 350 F to loosen and by then wire insulation and the coils will be damaged).
A very small amount on the screws should provide vibration protection for the primary wires.
