Coils?

The 1980 KZ1000B4 im working on has a yellow coil with andrews chicago imdossed on side bike runs fine just looking for info on the coils? i looked on the company web page didnt find any thing on the coils

May use ohmmeter to determine resistance between primary winding terminals, and compare to factory coil specs.

Andrews coils are comparable with Dyna coils in quality.

Both brands carry different coils to match resistance requirements of a particular application (such as whatever ignition is currently fitted to 1980 KZ1000B4 at hand.)

As far as I know Andrews specialises in strictly HD stuff now. The only non HD thing I can find is Polaris cams.

Accel coils are yellow and currently manufactured.


Andrews sells 4.8 ohm and 2.8 ohm coils for HD, long as the ohms work with your ignition and you can make them fit your bike, there's no reason you can't use them on a Kawasaki.

the andrews coils r were on the KZ when i came to own it, and by the looks of them theve been on it a long time. very good spark. i talked with the techs at andrews they did produce the coils for a short while and they r 3.0 ohms .. guess ill keep them on the bike when it goes together

No one was saying that Andrews didn't sell KZ coils in the past, they used to sell cams for the KZ motors also.

Andrews is just another of those companies that is still around but no longer dealing with Kawasaki motorcycles, RC Engineering being another one you see brought up once in a while.

And Yoshimura, plus a bunch of others I can't remember.

It's all cool

On 30+ year old bikes it's hard to tell what you'll find, lots of things get changed and modified over the years.

thye cool thing is ...if they are working and dont give you any trouble...then you may not only have a decent ignition and coils match...but you may have an older pair that was from a good run/batch ..and they may/will last forever....no need buying newer ones and stepping down in quality or chance them being only "as good"...

i wish i had a set of those old yellow brands just because :woohoo: !!!!

Thats funny - I was tearing down my new-to-me 75 z1b and found i have some blue andrews coils.. couldnt finy any google images cept the red n black ones. They have 6262A stamped on em and what looks like a date stamp of 2-81. Used with dyna s.. anyone know these, and resistance???

A few people here were/are using the blue Andrews coils.

I think they were 3-ohms, but someone may need to confirm that.
