so if i wanted to buy anew advance unit itself for say a 1979 MKII do i need to go throguh a kawi shop and pay through my nose...i looked at Z1ejnt and did not see one....i like the whole dyna 2000 kit they show but it may be more than i need at present....new advance units are facotry or does anyone make one for sale too???

kawasaki.com shows advancer as "Cancelled," which I take as being no longer available to order from the factory.

Maybe some dealer has one on a shelf somewhere. Am vaguely recalling a dealer network system whereby discontinued parts may be searched for.

Would keep looking on ebay.

Looking at Kawasaki.com I think the one you need is part number 21148-1009. Double check. If that's the right one there's one on eBay:

Fairly recently, someone had a older "J" engine with the newer Kawasaki ignition system installed in it that electronically advances/retards the ignition curve.

Perhaps this would be the way to go when the mechanical advancer finally dies......

If you can wait a few more days I might be able to harvest a set off a '77 KZ1000. I bought a rusty heap from a guy, it was sitting in his backyard since the 80's. Maybe you saw my thread about the value of a vetter fairing.

'77 might be different from a Mk2 but I will sell them very cheap if you want them. Basically the cost of postage and a cup of starbucks or something like that.

Depending on condition, it might be preferable to renovate and use the entire advancer unit, including the springs, and thereby not risk damaging the functioning springs by removing them and installing them on another advancer.

Yeah. if they've been messed up already, probably not going to get them back to useable. Weird, though, about the sticky timing. Maybe the springs are actually getting hung up on something? Or maybe the shaft has a bur in it?

No hang-ups or burs on anything. It all moves light and easily. The problem is I can't seem to adjust it to a nice middle ground. It's either too loose causing the flutter at idle, or too tight making it advance late but suddenly.

No amount of fiddling with it helps.

It just plain sucks :(

I'm in the process of configuring some new springs I've harvested from an old clock. They have more, but thicker coils, and seem to be close in consisitancy with the other 1000 LTD.

We shall see...

Consdiering a large following of ppl on these old KZ's, wonder if a letter to Kawasai itself would provide us some technical info.....

Example, a KZR letter with our images and text reply for info.... whats the worst that could happen?

I've seen some of our images (shudder, shudder, shudder -see below). The worst that could happen is we are all locked up together in an institution and banned from ever using the internet again.

When I first did a swap to Kawi elec. ignition on my 650, I used an advancer from a 1000, but did not use the 1000's springs.
Just found them, and they can be yours for the cost of shipping. I'm in Ontario.

The 1000's springs have 7 coils to them, where as a 650's have 9/10 coils.
