Advancer spring woes...

07 Oct 2010 07:48

The advance on my bike has slowly gone wonky over the last couple seasons, and now is just plain useless.
I want to replace the springs with OEM, but I cant find them anywhere... without buying the whole advancer unit.

I've tried different things/springs, and yikes! Don't bother, trust me.

Anyone have some good OEM springs, or am I reserved to the purchase?

The problem is that even on all the Kaws, the springs were all different. Virtually every size bike had a different advance curve. Your choices are three New Kawasaki advancer. Change to Dyna 2000 ignition or MSD MC4 ignitions. The springs are only available with the individual advancers. I am not sure why the ones on your bike went bad. The springs are only under load when the bike is running past 2500 rpm.

I've been able to restore a little bit of the lost preload on the springs by just barely squeezing one end loop on each spring. This just makes the springs a tiny bit shorter... almost unnoticable to the naked eye, but the timing light shows it made a difference. I've done this probably to every bike I have and most of the other KZ's I've come across needed it too. Most have the advance coming in a bit too early. In bad cases it jumps around at idle.

Oh, and yeah, I've looked everywhere to find new ones... NADA.

If it was possible to measure the spring overall dimensions relaxed, streched to the maximum and the force used to pull to max, you could probably find a suitable substitute. Pain in the a**, but possible

probably not cheap either.

Are these springs for a 900? I probably know where to get some... anybody who drag races usually has there advancer welded fixed at 35-45 degrees depending on what fuel they are running.

Racers usually leave the springs on there (non functional) but some take them off - ask around and see what you can find.

I have a set, but they are for a 650 and I want them as a backup set.

You could also try a hi-performance aftermarket automotive speed shop...

www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/K...utor+advance+springs

Looks like a lot of companies make spring kits for distributors, they should have a box of stuff like that laying around.

I made new springs. Went to Orchard Supply and found the closest which were a bit longer and cut them down. Very hard to bend, took a couple of tries.

I made a thread about it a while back, not sure where it went. Search feature is useless. Couldn't even scan the threads I started by date.

Nobody sells replacement springs.

Ah, good info.

The springs are bunk cause a P.O. already $%#&ed with them, and they were tough enough to get "acceptable" when I got the bike, but they are weak as all hell now, and its either really sloppy at idle, or strange advance as they stick for a second, then slap to full advance. Annoying for 1st gear slower take-offs.

Maybe I'll try making some like suggested...

or cut one stiffer, then soften the other...

Yeah. if they've been messed up already, probably not going to get them back to useable. Weird, though, about the sticky timing. Maybe the springs are actually getting hung up on something? Or maybe the shaft has a bur in it?

I think this is the thread that has what I learned about making springs for a 750 twin.
