I have a 1999 kz1000p It use to fire right away, but now when i try to start it it will turn over for a while then it will start popping and eventualy start. if i put it in the sun then it starts easyer i replaced the coils and pick up coils but the problem is still there should i replace the ic unit? but just before this problem my turn signals stopped working. and when i pulled the tank off i found the wires from the right handle bar controls were pulled tight acrossed the top of the engine, on the controles is the start button, sirene switch, headlight switch, and pursute switch. the turn sig. are on the left.any ideas what to do to get my bike working again?

Check the wires to the coils and make sure you are getting close to battery voltage across both input wires of coils.

How old is the battery?

Have you checked the charging system?

Take some time to go thru your wiring and clean/repair any loos/corroded connectors, especially in the engine area and behind the headlight.

I wouldn't eliminate fuel delivery if the bike runs fine after it does finally start. Does the bike start up OK if the petcock gets moved to the PRI position for a few seconds before starting? Is the choke functional? Unless, of course, that bike has fuel injection.

Does the siren still work? I'd get in so much trouble if I had a police bike.

Were spark plug wires also replaced?
If old and hard, may be leaking voltage, especially when damp.

Could remove plugs and observe spark quality while spinning the engine over.
Look for fat blue. Not thin orange.

Good Fortune! :)

Any particular reason why the pick up coils were replaced?

Were brand new ignition coils fitted, with correct ohm resistance?

it sounds like an ignition prob. and the coils are new the only parts left are the pick up coils(130.00) and the ic ignighter(390.00) althow i found an aftermarket for 95.00 (ricks motorsports)i hate to think im just throwing parts at a problem, the bike is 11 years old prob.needs these parts anyway.

Whoa... Orange Spark????

You mentioned coil swap out but what about plug wires/caps?

Good ground to engine case?

Unfortunately, don;t have a Police special OEM manual regarding the electronics/ignitier module....
