Ignition coils on the 80’s Kz1000,Kz1100’s and Gpz1100’s are wired the same, that is as you sit on the bike, the LEFT ignition coil primary(small wires) are two wires, RED and BLACK. The secondary (or sparkplug wires) go to #1 and #4 sparkplugs.
The cylinders are numbered left to right as you sit on the seat; #1,#2,#3, and #4.
For the RIGHT ignition coil, the primary wires, again are two wires, RED and GREEN, with the secondary going to #2 and #3.
The RED wire gets it’s voltage from the run/stop switch on the right handlebar switch pod.
The BLACK and GREEN wires connect to the IC Igniter(if the bike has the Kawasaki supplied electronic ignition) it actually gives the coils their grounds to fire the sparkplugs.
Primary(small wires) side of the coils will read between 1.8 to 3.0 ohms.
Secondary(sparkplug wire ports)side of the coil will read between 10.4K to 15.6K ohms.
__________________________________________________________
Keep in mind that the smaller 4’s (650 & 750) may have the wiring reversed, that is the RIGHT coil primary will be two wires, RED and BLACK with the secondary(sparkplugs) going to #1 and #4.
The LEFT coils primary wiring would be again two wires, RED and GREEN, with the secondary(sparkplugs) going to #2 and #3.
These engines have what is known as a “Wasted Spark†that is, a sparkplug will fire during an exhaust stroke. It does no damage and many other motorcycle engines have this design.
Does this help?

I've got three factory shop manuals sitting in a small bookcase within reach.
1.My original one when I bought my bike back in 1982, # 99924-1026-02 that covers 1981-1982 Kz1000-Kz1100 models
2.A newer one,# 99924-1026-03 bought back in August 2, 2008 from www.repairmanual.com for $59.29 before shipping that covers 1981-1983 Kz1000-Kz1100 models.
3.A Clymer manual that covers 1000-1100 Fours 1981-1985.

I got my dynatek coils the other day and while reading the instructions it said if I had a dual output coil it was universal and wasn't polarized. Now my question is, are the coils on the KZ dual output, and if they aren't what wires go where. My next question is, does it matter what spark plug wire goes where?
If not already done, would assure coil resistance (ohms in primary winding) in new coils matches resistance of the coils being replaced.
Good Fortune!

I got the 3.0 ohms from Z1E. It said it wouldn't hurt to have a higher resistance in case I wanted to upgrade to a Dyna ignition. It will work right?
Right!

Where planning to retain indefinitely the oem igniter ignition, am thinking it's better to keep using the lower resistance oem coil.
The oem system also uses a separate 1.5~1.9 ohm resistor along with the 1.2~1.9 ohm coil, so perhaps these two together are closer in function to the 3 ohm Dyna green coil used alone without the resistor.
Seems to me the oem resistor would not be used with Dyna 3 ohm coil, but please await more certain advice about this aspect.
For whatever reason, Kawasaki chose to pair the low ohm coil with a separate resistor, instead of just using a higher ohm coil, but I don't recall off-hand the specifics.
Good Fortune!

it's cool. While me and my dad were taking the old coils off yesterday we found the resistor to be broken in about 3 pieces and the wire un-coiled so we went ahead and pulled it out. next question is what do we do with the wires the came off the resistor.
The oem system provides voltage from the engine stop switch through the resistor to the ignition coil primary wiring terminal.
Without the resistor, am thinking just connect the wires to each other whereby current will follow the same pattern, just not running through the resistor.
If these particular two wires aren't connected, coil primary would need some other source for switched battery voltage.
Good Fortune!
