I'm gonna worry myself sick about this. I know you said they would work Patton but a d\Dyna ignition is still quite a bit away. I've been reading up and one person was saying 3.0 ohm coils would be perfect for the bike while another said that the stock coils were 1.2 ohms so now i'm thinking 3.0 is too high. would it be more in the right range now that the resistor is gone? Do I need to order different coils?

This is from my factory shop manual:

"Primary(small wires) side of the coils will read between 1.8 to 3.0 ohms." I would not worry about what you've got as long as the produced spark ignites the air/gasoline mix and runs the engine.

Here's what the FSM says about the resistor on 1979 KZ1000 which introduced the igniter style ignition as replacement for the former points style ignition.

The resistor limits the amount of primary current flowing through the coil to a safe maximum to prevent over-heating of the ignition coil primary winding whose electrical resistance is low to ensure a high performance spark.

Good Fortune! :)

As I recall, there's a significant difference in dwell times between the igniter and Dyna-S style electronic ignitions.
But don't remember the specifics and electronic reasoning involved.

Would be comfortable relying on advice from the good and highly knowledgeable folks at Z1E

And would also agree with MFolks to not worry about what you've got as long as the produced spark ignites the air/gasoline mix and runs the engine.

Good Fortune! :)

If not already done, would visually observe spark quality while spinning engine with spark plugs removed and bases held grounded against the engine head.

A fat blue spark means good-to-go.

Good Fortune! :)

Sweet I appreciate it guys I feel better about it now. still have painting the engine and finish cleaning the carbs and reassembly than we can fire it off :)

I use 3 ohm Accels with the stock ignition and they work fine. The Dyna 3-ohms are similar.

Ideally, you want 2.2 to 2.3 ohm coils. That is what the ignition was meant to use. I believe the first year electronic ignitions used resistors and lower resistance coils because they didn't have a source for the 2.3 ohm coils yet. Shortly after that, they went to the 2.3 ohm coils with no resistor.

The 3 ohm coils are a little slower to charge so they will likely have a little less spark energy/duration at higher RPMs. If the bike runs fine, then no worries. If the bike seems to stumble at higher RPMs, you can get lower resistance (2.2 ohm) coils or you can get the Dyna S which works well with the 3 ohm coils.

Do yourself a big favor (to stop worrying about it) and swap both coils and ignition module simultaneously....

This way you'll have the correct resistance, you'll have the correct/ideal current draws and you'll obtain the performance you're trying to obtain in the ignition spark and timings... ;)

I know, I know ($$$) but for another $120, swap them both and be done with it.... How can you go wrong....

I just looked at what bills are coming out next month and i'll have a paycheck and a half towards bike stuff so that ignition may be closer than I thought :)
