charging system diagnosis
01 May 2010 16:08
finally after 2 years i have my 78 kz 650 b running...well sorta. before i put the bike up i had a charging issue which i thought has something to do with the harness that the po had hacked. i have since replace the harness but with the bike running, i notice the battery isnt holding a charge. even when i rev the engine i see no difference. i tried replaceing the stator and regulator/rectifer with used items but never checked to see if they were working properly. what are my steps to chase the charging problem down?

First off you need a fully charged battery, then while the motor is running measure the voltage across the battery at about 3500 to 4000 RPM's you should have somewhere around 14.4 volts for a correct functioning charging system.

Might be an issue with faulty wiring or connector.
Would assure battery terminal connections are clean and snug.
And assure integrity of connection where negative battery cable attaches to rear of engine.
Good Fortune!

so i found this thread...
kzrider.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&...d=4&id=363197#363198
i tested the 3 combinations and im getting about 30 volts on 2 of the combinations and 70 volts on the last. so im leaning toward bad stator? im still wondering how to check the regulator/rectifier

www.electrosport.com
used to have a troubleshooting section, go there and see if they can help.I'm not sure if they cover testing the regulator/rectifier.
