My 82 CSR has an electic speedo and reads 85 mph. so far I havent been able to find another elec speedo that reads 160.I have several cable driven units here that read 160, so if u need a cable driven one I have several and the cables that drive them. I think ur going to find that urs is electric.bj
Cool. What are you asking for it?

Dang, I finally checked my speedo and it is electronic driven, at least that is what it says in the manual. I hope to find that somewhere. So does that mean that I can buy any aftermarket speedo out there for it and probably have to modify a mounting for it?

If you have an 82 1000M2 (CSR) than I am not quite sure where you are looking in the manual to see an Electronic tach. The only thing that should be electronic in that cluster is the fuel gauge.

Perhaps the manual covers both CSR and LTD.
Similar models, but different speedometers.
CSR with cable and LTD with electronic

But under same year LTD listing, no speedo cable offered .
Cable driven speedometer will have threaded outlet on bottom where cable end screws onto the speedometer. Other end of cable attaches into drive unit on left side of front axle.
Good Fortune!

I think he is missing his speedo entirely. Also,if electric,it wont work without an odometer that goes with it. I have both elec and cable drive units here and an odometer, but will need to know what hes got to help him out.bj

Would help to have a pic of 1982 1000CSR oem cable driven 85mph speedometer to compare with possibly available similar 160mph speedometer.
Perhaps the 160mph cable version from an earlier large four model might look the same except face of gauge, but am uncertain about differences in the internal settings, and concerned that cable rpm and/or drive ratio from front wheel may differ between 85mph and 160mph versions, whereby needle would indicate a lower mph than actual road speed.
For example, the oem 85mph needle points to 40mph at 40mph road speed, where the cable is spinning at rpm governed by the drive unit.
With same cable speed at 40mph road speed, what speed will the needle indicate on the 160mph speedo?
Good Fortune!

Re: Speedometer Question

good question and I have no answer (a raw guess would be 82.5).As in so many other old bikes, when I started resto on mine, someone had replaced the cable drive with an elec.sending unit.all my instruments were missing so I have no idea what the bike started with.As an 82 anything,I suspect that it had an 85 mph speedo, elec or cable, but I cant verify that. The other elec speedo I have also registers only 85 mph.maybe someone can assist us.bj
