no spark when using electric start, kick works. was created by paul_the_welder
1980 kz650. I noticed its really hard to start with electric start.Lately it hasent been starting at all with electric. I checked and its not getting a spark when you engage the starter. I can kick it once and it fires off even cold. Runs good. Any idea's?

Your battery is too weak. Do a load test. Most likely you need a new battery.

The battery spins the motor well. Way fast enough to start it. Just when the starter is engaged, its not getting spark.

Points bike? When you use the starter you might not have enough fire for the plugs.

I was helping a friend work on his bike and it wouldn't start. spun over fine. I kicked it one time and it fired.

He had to try as he has never kicked a street bike over. Roy

You mean weak battery?B) So a battery could light up the headlight well and spin the motor well and still be bad?

That is correct. Try to turn off the headlight by pulling the fuse and see if the bike starts than.

A weak coil can make a bike really hard to start on the electric starter because the battery voltage dips just enough to starve the spark.

Guess how I learned that.....

But check the battery first: if the batt voltage drops below about 9 - 9.5V under starter crank, it's probably hosed.
