The electric motor rebuilding shop should be able to re-wrap and insulate the windings for the field coils on the starter motor.
If not,try the other suggestions about using a Honda starter motor.

I don't know if this will help or not but on the 650's you have to pull the clutch in to get the starter to engage. I only mention this because you say you have been kicking her for a while and you might not be aware of the clutch lockout. Just my .02 cents

Just a clarification:
- Pull in the Clutch Lever for Electric starts.
- Do not pull in Clutch Lever for Kick starts.
Best of success.

If you search the web, you will likely be able to find a compatibility chart for the starter based on brand and model number. I was able to find several for the kz1000 a while back.

Thats funny that you mention the clutch having to be in. The first time i rode the bike (it was my cousins at the time) he told me that the starter didnt work, i had the clutch in and it started right up to his amazment. I hav rewired the entire bike and eliminated the switch on the clutch lever. Is there any mechanical reason i would need to still have the clutch in to use the starter? thankyou

It is a safty thing from the factory. If you bypassed the clutch switch make sure it will still turn over the starter the way it is wired if not you will never be able to use the starter
