Kz650 starter was created by pburnhamb
After tearing the bike apart and building the engine up I rode last season without the starter wired up (i just kick started it).I wired it up this afteoon, but the starter woudnt turn. i took the starter out and it worked itermitently without the load and wouldnt work unless the gear on the stater motor was pointed at the ground....Bad/ worn bushings????. I hooked a positive to the bolt on the starter and a negative to the body where the mounting bolts go through and it would spin faster, but i could stop the gear on the starter motor with my hand. This seems too weak to turn my engine over.....am i wrong (too strong!! lol).

If i need a new starter motor does anyone have one? what years/bikes can i get one from?

thank you,
-patrick-

Try these websites for rebuilding information:
www.mawonline.com/newsite/rick_s_motorsp...-starter_brushes.htm
www.cyclewareables.com/pages/street_star...kits/startmtrkit.htm
www.psep.biz/store/mitsuba_starter_motors_page_2.htm

I'd think unless the motor has excessively worn commutator(the part the brushes rub against), it can be rebuilt.

Thanks, I took it apart and the 4coils i think thats what they are anyway, whatever they were wapped in has dissintigrated and now the copper coils are exposed to the sides of the cover and to themselves (each wrap had some insulaion between it and the next) no sure if that matters, but i bet it does or it wouldnt have been there in the first place. I dont think i can take the coils apart and rewrap them without dammaging/bending them too much, not to mention i wouldnt know what to wrap them with..... The brushes to look quite worn too, but i think im better off with a different one ive seen rebuilt ones for $150 but im out of work till spring so funds are low....

Take your starter motor to the local electrical motor rebuilding shop and see what they say. It should not be difficult for them to tell you one way or the other about the cost of re-doing the insulation.

pburnhamb, if you decide to replace the Starter Motor, I have read here somewhere that there is a Honda Starter Motor which is a form and fit replacement and that it has a greater cranking capacity.

Can we have before and after pics.

Let us know how it works out.

Best of success. :)

Before and after pics ey? ....... Well u prob know what it looks like so i'll try to get some after pics up here this afternoon! Yeah, i was hoping the one on my 77'CB750k would fit, i looked on bike bandit and they are quite different, too bad. If anyone has a clue what Honda bike or others that the starter motor is the same as a 78 kz650 that would be big help, that way maybe i can find one at a boneyard. I'll try taking it to the rebuild shop on tuesday since they wont be open till then. all help/ideas welcome. thanks guys
