Dyna 2000 Upgade? was created by Treeman
Hey Guys,

I think about upgrading from stock to a Dyna 2000 and coils on my 84 KZ700. Is the improved performance worth the cost? I have a 4 to 1 vance & hines header, rejetted the carbs and put a bigger sprocket on the rear already.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

It's a nice upgrade but for the mods you have it'd be cheaper for you to get a Dyna S and be just as reliable. If you have/going to get high compression pistons and cams to use the different advance or retard curves it'd be worth it.

I have a Dyna2000 and 2.2ohm coils on my 1000 with the same basic mods are your bike and when I get my 1428cc 13.5:1 engine built for my 900, the 1000 is getting a Dyna S and 3.0ohm coils, as the Dyna2000 is more suited to the modified engine.

any of you guys ever had the box fail? i must have replaced my boxes 4 of 5 times each on my z1 and my 77kz650 the z1 has a brand new wiring harness and every thing else is new 2 stator regulator etc it even has a agm battery. i could never figure out why they die. when i say die they malfunction like it misses on 1 and 4 or vise verse then all sudden all spark then it does it again at random. other then that there great boxs i love the electronic tach feature i use it on my z1 with pmc's gauges.

I put the 2000 on my 1978 kz 650 when i got it this fall and it seems to work great, but when i bought my 1976 kz900 a little while after, from a custom builder i told him what i have done to my 650 and he said i should have went with the dyna s just because there was no box to go out on it,he is a kaw engine builder, and shop owner, that said what 's done is done and i hav'nt had any problems yet with mine,as for yours idk what to say ,just wondering if there might be a short in the system some where?

i have a Dyna2000. the rev limiter did not work the 1st summer. they rechecked it out , and sent me a new 1. last summer it worked fine.
1 of the advantages with the 2000 , is that it replaces your worn spring activated , inaccurate, advance mechanism.
2. rev limiter
3. tack, drive.
4. advance curves.
5. no more points.
6. can run stronger,2.2 ohm coils with it for more spark.

I can see another benefit in the 2000 over my S series...
Don't get me wrong, luv it as is but....

Phoenix 1400 elevation... jetting on the $$$...
Payson, Prescott and Flagstaff up to 5500 elevation , runs on the rich side. She still runs strong but rich just the same...

With the on the fly mapping so to speak, you'd be able to help the old girl out a little during such runs... Yes/No?

when changing altitudes u would be better to adjust the carbs. adjusting the ignition timing would not be as effective.
In order to change the timing curve U would have to put it on a dyno and have a new map programed .the unit will store 4 maps.
The 2000 only comes with 2 maps for a 2 valve motor.1 stock curve and 1 that advances at a dif rate, for a higher compresion motor.

Well then, what the hell is the benefit again?

Me, just tweak the slow jet 1/8-1/4 turn and she idles fine enough up in the hills...

Thanks for the update, Dyna S it is then....

Thanks everyone,

Gives me more to think about. Bike runs good now with the exception of a few electrical shut downs last year. It's fun to tweak!

Typically, the Dyna-S is all you need on a street bike.

There are some very nice features with the Dyna 2000:
Built in rev-limiter.
Ignition cutout circuit (safety or security switch).
Feeds for electronic tach - both crank speed and cam speed option.
Retard circuit from sensor (like a turbo boost pressure sensor).
TOTALLY programmable using the optional programming kit. You can set your advance/retard curve EXACTLY how you want it.
Eliminates mechanical advancer.
Allows use of lower resistance coils (which means better spark).

A few years ago Dynatek did have some problems with the earlier modules, but when they redesigned the unit a couple of years ago, those issues seem to have gone away. In the past year, I can't remember any failures of the unit that can be attributed to the unit. Which brings me to the next point...

...like any electronics, the Dyna 2000 can be damaged by excessive voltage. If your regulator fails, it's not unusual to see as much as 18 volts surging through the electrical system - this will fry delicate electronics, blow headlights, crisp wiring harnesses and boil batteries. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM PERIODICALLY... what was working fine last year may not be this year... 25+ year old electrical components do fail...
