Today, I installed the dyna s electronic ignition on my 77 kz1000 and have absolutely no power to my coils.

I properly connected the white & black wires to their respective connector and connected the red/yellow common wire and red wire into the splice connector.

I have power up to this point, but nothing to the coils.

Strange, because I had power last week when I checked the voltage and there was a marginal drop in power from the battery.

So, does this mean the coils are shot?

Do they just go out like that?

I installed the Dyna S hoping it would cure my running like crap problem.

Sounds to me like you have a problem at that cheesy connector they give you to attach to the red/yellow wire. Take that connector off and throw it away. Take your red/yellow wire and cut it. Strip both ends. Now take the stripped wires and twist both ends back together and put a butt connector on the end. Now you have 1 solid wire with a new connector kinda like a Y. Now take the wire that feeds the Dyna S and connect it to the other end of the butt connector. I had the same problem and this is what I did to fix it. I would be very surprised if this doesnt get you going.

Thanks, I will try it tomorrow.

I just didn't think the coils could go bad over a week of sitting.

Typically, red/yellow wire out of harness has a dual connector that feeds battery+ voltage to each coil when ignition switch is ON.

This is sometimes referred to as "switched power" meaning the wire has battery+ voltage when the ignition switch is ON.

Dyna-S requires such switched power.

Dyna furnishes a blue plastic clip-on tap to connect its power wire into a switched power source in the bike's wiring.

Any switched power source is okay for the Dyna-S, but the red/yellow wire is often selected for the switched power source and tapped into with the blue plastic clip.

Sometimes there's an unused bullet connector style receptacle on the bike's wiring harness with switched power that could be used to supply battery+ voltage to the Dyna-S.

Many owners prefer soldering the tap connection instead of using the blue plastic clip.

Perhaps the loss of power to the coils in this instance was an unintentional disconnect from the red/yellow wire feeding switched voltage to the coils.

The Dyna-S has a front (right hand side) pickup coil and a rear (left hand side) pickup coil.

The wire from the front Dyna-S pickup coil connects to the ignition coil having plug wires to the inside #2/3 spark plugs, which ignition coil is usually located on the brake lever side of the bike. The wire might be green or have a green collar.

The wire from the rear Dyna-S pickup coil connects to the ignition coil having plug wires to the outside #1/4 spark plugs, which ignition coil is usually located on the shift lever side of the bike. The wire might be black or have a black collar.

Regardless of colors, the important thing is that the front (right hand) Dyna-S pickup coil be connected to whichever ignition coil is firing the two inside spark plugs. And that the rear (left hand) Dyna-S pickup coil be connected to whichever ignition coil is firing the two outside spark plugs.

Old Man,

Thanks for the pics.

I re-wired everything up and it appears to be getting power to the coils. If I wasn't so cheap, I would just put new coils on now. But thats another project.

I pretty much went backwards on the directions.

Now I can't seem to get the GD Bolt/Hex Washer off the shaft.

Does it just pull off?

After you take the bolt out the nut/washer behind it should come right off

All you should have to do is hold the nut with a wrench and remove the bolt from the center of it and it all comes off.

Would be careful when attempting to remove the bolt that's screwed into end of the crankshaft, as these bolts have a nasty habit sometimes of breaking and leaving the threaded part tightly embedded inside the crankshaft. Often sheared off flush with end of crankshaft.
