COILS MAKE A POPPING SOUND WHEN IGN SWITCH TURNED

I never heard it before....not normal i m guessing...crack or pop when you turn ign key off from on and when you go to
the right from on....battery is 12.4, measuring at input for coils i get 9.4....i know thats way too low...one plug from each coil (3 and 4) havent been firing correctly and 1 and 2 plugs look fine.....whats with the popping?......thanks...keith

i looked around....dont see any bare wires...i dont remember hearing this before....got a good shock to my finger....forgot key was on and was moving horn wire away from coil....zap....had a lot more kick than a 9 volt on the tongue:laugh:

i m planning on doing "the mod".....but i just want to know if maybe there is a coil problem....they are not that old.....

Keith with all the problems with this bike would it not be better to find another ? Use that one for parts ?:laugh: Make sure you didn't leave a Jiffy Pop tin under the tank.:laugh:

the thought has crossed my mind:laugh: so is that your roundabout way of saying you dont know or youre not sure?:laugh:

This is not uncommon with points or a Dyna S.

take the coils off and look for cracks on the underside i have done a few set's of coils on kz1300's that had simalar symptoms. it was almost always due to a cracked coil. be carefull when your mounting them up that you have the right spacers because you can stress them by haveing to much pressure on the center of the coil from contacting the frame. also make sure you don't leave the ignition on for long periods of time without it running as the coils can build up major amounts of heat internally also causing them to crack from expansion and contraction when they cool down.

anymore...maybe this is the latest version of it....i m aware of coils heating up, i make it a point not to leave
key on when it isnt running......

sometimes if the piston is just in the right spot and there is a bit of extra fuel residue in the cylinders a dyna ignition will cuase the fuel to ignite and you will hear what sounds like a fart as well. the reason i'm thinking cracks is you have weird voltages at the coils and the fact you got zapped makes me think that even stronger.

I'm no electrical guru but oftentimes cutting off the ignition is exactly like the points opening. The result is a last spark through whichever coil was energized. if your secondary side is compromised you might well hear the spark.

mine has a dyna s and dyna 3 ohm and does the half fart when i turn the key too....most of the time i've ben riding first,warm ect.....never even heard what your describing witha popping...interesting..one by one and these things sort out and get to be daily riders...it'll surface....keith1 wrote:

Yep my 900 farts. Not all the time. But yep my baby farts! :X

I used to think I startled her so now I make sure to talk to her before turning the key ...but ...she...still...farts. I think she is doing it on purpose.

I'd do the coil mod tho to get the power up to the coils for sure.

well, i figured out the crackling noise.....i m a frackin retard sometimes......i rechecked and still only have 9.8.....gonna do the mod tommorow nite.....then again, the way my noggin has been shutting down lately.....been a banner week......i guess thats what i get for working without beer......thanks guys.......
