ignition switch time... was created by Bluemeanie
My '80 KZ650 F1 is in need of an ignition switch. It's so loose that if I hit a bump in the road the key pops out into my lap! I now have to start it up and then put key in my pocket. Problem is that there are about 10 differant switch assemblies on ebay. Mine has the plug (not sure how many wires) and a separate brown wire. Kawasaki.com says the switch (#27005-5007) fits my '80 F1 and '80 LTD only. None of the ebay switches show the separate brown wire and they talk about a 5 or 6 pin connector. Will one of these switches work on my bike and how to I finangle the "brown" wire? Anybody know which one of these switches are good and which ones are crap? Thanks guys... :)

I guess that's a bad side effect of being able to ride year round, wearing out your ignition. ;)

What's your key look like? Got a pic.
If the key is worn, and it doesn't have enough "teeth" to it, it will pull out. A new key cut to factory specs may just stay in, unless of course the tumblers in the ignition are too worn as well.

Z1 probably sells an Emgo unit. I'd guess that one of those would be fine.
Maybe shoot them a quick question about the brown wire.

Here's a nos switch that shows the brown wire in the photo:
New Kawasaki Ignition Switch Assembly # 27005-5007 .
On the off chance that you decide to purchase it (it's pricy compared to the aftermarket item), be sure to verify that it's a genuine Kawasaki part.

I would search the part number on ebbayy to locate a new or nos Kaw switch, then ask about the brown wire & verify the mfg.

It could be just the key but I doubt it after almost 30 years. I'd rather just put a new switch in... Thanks

That is my switch and proper part number but damn, don't have $85 floating around. Would love to get it as it is a NOS part! I guess I'll have to check wiring schematic about the brown wire and call the fine folks at Z1 and see what they say. The brown wire is unique to my bike only.

Any of you guys order switches on line and which ones to avoid?

My 81 650-CSR has the brown wire.
I'd guess that most if not all of the aftermarket units are Emgo.
PS: I sent you a pm.
