According to kawaisaki.com, your system has one coil and a set of points. Replacing the coil, plug wire and tuning up the points (with a timing light/dwell meter etc) will definitely improve the running of your system.
WG's coil mod can help you as well if the voltage at the coils isn't what it should be.
If you're looking for an electronic ignition, dynaonline has the dyna-s for four cylinder bikes, but they also list one for the suzi gs400 which is a twin, soooo it may fit. It might be worth asking them some questions around it.
Are you having any specific issues with your setup or just looking for alittle better running? Are there any good ignition upgrades for the kz400d? Thanks!

If you have a good set of points, you use them to trigger an HEI ignition. This eliminates the condenser, and lets you use a hotter coil. Also, you'll almost never have to adjust the points again after that and the points will last for 100,000 miles.
I've got one running on a KZ400. It helped eliminate the occasional pop and/or backfire that was caused by pitting points.
