Non Kawi regulator/rectifier question was created by Kawickrice
A friend of mine gave me an old rectifier/regulator for a Yamaha Virago he had laying around........this regulator has 7 wires and I can only figure out where six go. There is a yellow wire in the diagram that goes from the regulator to a Diode, what is this extra wire for and where would I hook it to if I don't have a diode? I was thinking I might be able to use in my GS1100 in the future. The GS is has a 6 wire regulator.

I wish we knew the output voltage of the alternator, I'd hate to say use it, and some electrical problem later on developes causing "Crispy Wiring".

A total stab: the "extra wire" on some rectifier/regs is a remote sense lead to go out and connect to 12V at the battery to get better regulation than sensing it at the regulator's 12V line since there is a lot of voltage drop going down that line to the battery.

On the XV diagram, the brown wire looks like the sense line. It ties to the fuse block to sense system voltage.

The yellow wire is tied to the diode block. The diode block appears to be a headlight control device of some sort, among other things. You could try it (leaving the yellow wire unconnected) and turn the bike off if the voltage goes above 15v. Just don't rev it too much while testing.

However, your GS diagram shows a 4-wire reg/rec. And, it shows the 3 phases are not identical. One gets wired through a seperate junction. This one is probably the extra winding for when the headlight is on. For the U.S. it is permanently "on". The GS diagram does not show a ground for the reg/rec. Perhaps the body is ground on the reg/rec. There is also no dedicated sense line on the GS diagram. You will have to add that line if it does not exist on the bike. The brown wire is a switched 12v line from the main ignition switch.

You said the GS has a 6-wire reg/rec, so I assume the GS diagram is not actually for your bike.

The GS is per diagram I open my mouth before checking the schematics. How would I add a sence wire if there is not one, where would it hook to?
If I leave the yellow wire unhooked and the battery voltage spikes where would that wire hook up at?
I know this is only a shot in the dark but I am curious.

@ Kaw....

It's free I get it but why are you going this route....

Reasoning:
Rectification... Convert Vac to Vdc but at what current/loads.... This is accomplished with diodes of different current, peak and reverse current specifications, half way vs full wave rectifications.... You have no idea what's inside or how it is designed regarding load current conditions...

Regulators... You can get numerous +12Vdc voltage regulators but at what current (amperage) ratings where they designed for...

Seriously brother, buy a new one designed for your beloved KZ for this is just FUBAR in the making....

OK, I'll SHTFU now....

Rock, my Kaw has the separate regulator/rectifier and all is good there once again. Never had a problem in almost 30 years with it so I chose to keep it the way it and not convert to the combo unit

The reason my curiosity got me is when I got the GS it had a regulator from who knows what bike, and then I arced it beyond repair and had to replace it a while back. Since I have replaced the regs on both bikes recently I though it might be a good back up. The regulator I am curious about is a 3 phase 280 watt unit. With the headlight and factory ignition draw on the GS I thought it would be sufficient.

Ok then, burn it (Suzuki) up, we/I won't care then....

Some people use photochopping for evil. I try to use it for good.

Look closely at this new diagram.

You have to add in that gray wire (white?) for voltage sense and a black/white for ground.
