well, the first thing that must be fixed on my new kz650 project is the main key ignition switch. At some point during its life, the owner either lost the key or someone stole it. It looks like someone used a screwdriver to break through the lock, so it needs to be replaced. I'm having a bit of a hard time finding a new one, and i was wondering if anyone knows which other kawasaki models use the same size switch. I dont care about the size of the key, just the size of the barrel and mouting bracket. By the way, my bike is a '77.

The "file photo" in the $14.95 item is misleading - it shows the complete unit, but I betcha 100 bucks it's only the key switch assy without the body & steering lock.

Z1Enterprises.com probably has an iginition switch.
They have a complete unit w steering lock for the KZ650-H CSR. If they don't have one for your bike, contact them - they are very good at answering questions.

thanks for the good finds! But the problem is that, as you may remember, i live in japan. Many ebay sellers dont like to ship internationally, and i prefer to see the parts before i buy them anyways. If i do use an online auction, i will probably use yahoo's japanese auctions.

Unfortunatly, there isn't much on the yahoo auctions at the moment, so i figured that there must be some other kawasaki bikes that use the same part. I found a z750 main switch, as well as from GPZ's, and various others. Do you know if the z750's, z1's, or other bikes used the same switch?

I bought one from there for my 1979 GL1000 for $20.00 and it was better than any one I couldn't trust off ebay. My old one was missing keys. Someone told me to get a locksmith to re-key it, $35.00 to have it done and I would still have an old ignition switch waiting to go bad. New one is great.

that is also a good find, thank you. But to say again, what i really want is to know if there are any other kawasakis that use the same part. It is also important to me that the switch is an original kawasaki part, it seems that most of these switches for sale are new and not original OEM parts.

The info below was collected from Kawasaki.com parts diagrams and KZ650.INFO wiring diagrams:

The following KZ650’s use part number 27005-5001. It has a 6-pin connector that includes power to the “hazard” switch.

KZ650-C1 (Custom) (1977)
KZ650-C2 (Custom) (1978)
KZ650-C3 (Custom) (1979)
KZ650-D1 (SR) (1978)
KZ650-D1A (SR) (1978)
KZ650-D2 (SR) (1979)

The following KZ’s use part number 27005-083. It has a 4-pin connector as these bikes didn’t have a “hazard” switch.

KZ650-B1 (1977)
KZ650-B2 (1978)
KZ650-B2A (1978)
KZ650-B3 (1979)
KZ750-B1 (1976)
KZ750-B2 (1977)
KZ750-B3 (1978)
KZ750-B4 (1979)

If your bike is a KZ650C1, as it appears to be in your avatar, you’ll need a switch with the 6-pin connector. Is yours a KZ650C1? (the VIN should include "C1" if it is) Ed

In you quetion you said
" I dont care about the size of the key, just the size of the barrel and mouting bracket. By the way, my bike is a '77"
STOCK OEM Whould have proper size key and all others would have
" I dont care about the size of the key,"
The "wrong" key size.
And no mention of wanting OEM in your quetion. Pricey that would be... The one from partsnmore I bought looked just like the OEM from the bike. Probably a "JAPAN" knock off. Plus my 1977 KZ650 ignition switch is all covered up so you dont even see if its a KNOCK off or the OEM one it still has. I like to keep things "STOCK" for value and looks. But they can't keep making OEM parts forever. So I get the next best things.

Great! Thank you very much! I will make note of those diagrams for future use. The kz650 in question is not the same as my avatar. It is a 1977 B1, so then i guess it would have the 4-pin. I will search the model number you gave me againsts other kawasaki parts and see if anything comes up. Very helpful, thank you

I hope you didn't take offense to my prior post. I was just trying find the info i needed. When i said i dont care about the size of the key, i was referring to the possibility that other kawasakis might have the same size barrel and mounting assembly but a different size key that would not fit the gas cap or seat lock on the 650. Since the lock on my gas cap is broken and the seat lock is missing, i wouldn't care if the key is different. At first i didnt mention i wanted OEM becuase i never asked where i could buy the part. I simply asked if there are any other bikes that use the same switch. I want OEM because bike theft is a big problem over here and i cant trust the newer made parts.

Keys are different on most all bikes..Other words anyone with a KAWASAKI could steel any KAWASAKI. And that same key made for only THAT bike would ONLY fit THat gas tank and That seat lock. And no offence or any hard feelings,I dont think writing back and forth are a personable way of properly explaining things. I think its always best to be in person and see whats being discussed. But sence were WORLDS apart so to speek, this is the next best thing just not easy to relay as correctly as we want to.
