Oil light wont go out was created by mjkawa
just finished an engine rebuild on 77 kz650. Got everything together, and just got her to idle smoothly, after some work on carbs.
But Oil light stays on.
I havent even test rode it yet, because I want to make sure that I actually have oil pressure.
I checked the connection on the oil pressure switch, and it is good. when wire is grounded the oil light is on.
So when I disconnect it the light goes off. When I touch it to the ground, or the switch, it turns on. It stays on when the engine is running.
Is there a simple way to prove that I have oil press??
I dont know if the switch was functioning before, because when I got the bike, it was disassembled.
I have put a lot of work into getting this thing together, and I dont want to run the engine w/ no oil press.
(Maybe another clue, the headlight has no voltage)
Any Ideas??
Help??

Thanks
MJ

Can you remove the sensor and put a pressure gauge in it's place? If you get sufficient pressure(check the shop manual for specs)then the sensor is bad.

Yeah, no doubt man.

If you can fit a clear hose in the opening, then the other end into a container. Pump the kicker (key off) and voila, oil pressure.

If your nervous about it, get a guage and make sure its to spec.

Good luck.

Is there somewhere to mount an oil press guage?
The sensor switch is behind the points. I dont think that there is room to mount a guage and then get the points back on.

Yeah, I see what you mean... oil switch is #16 right.

I'm not too familiar with the 650's...

Maybe attach one to the plug (#8) on the left side. I think that is an oil pressure rail.

Good luck.

If you take the pressure switch out of the engine it is possible to test it with an ohmmeter and a blow nozzle on your shop air hose. I like to mount the switch in the vise (gently) so that it won't move around, then clip one lead from multimeter to the metal outer body of the switch. Clip the other lead to the wire terminal on the switch. Set your meter to ohms, and use the blow nozzle to blow gently into the hole where the oil goes up into the switch. The switch should show continuity (0-5 ohms) when no pressure is applied, and should change to no continuity (open circuit) when pressure is applied.

A screw in gauge is the only way to know.

The one I got for mine came with fittings and an extender pipe.

I'm not sure if the 650 engine has a test port like the 900 or where it is located, but on mine I just installed a 1-1/2" pressure gauge from McMaster-Carr (their #3846K12) in the test port above the points cover.

Here is the key: The thread in the engine is metric, but I discovered that a 1/4"-18 tpi pipe bushing will screw right in and get snug toward the top of the tapered threads. I put red loctite on the bushing and screwed it in snug (15-20 ft pounds maybe), then teflon taped the 1/8" pipe threads on the gauge and screwed it into the bushing until it was snug and the gauge was pointing where I could see it while riding.
