coil mod question
21 Jun 2009 08:09
I'm doing the WG coil mod, and I can't find the yellow/red wire that powers the ignition coils (the third step in the process). There is a red wire with a yellow stripe coming from a harness above the valve cover, and a yellow wire with a red stripe down under the left side cover. Is there an easy way to tell which is the right wire?
Also, I think read somewhere else on here that it's ok to connect wire that the mod says should go to the starter (the one with the 10A fuse) directly to the positive battery terminal — is that correct?
Thanks,
Chris

If we knew what kind of bike your working on, we might know the colors you speak of. Put your bike in your signiture, it makes it easier to help you.

which wires...the red with yellow strip & the yellow with red stripe? How would I check to see if they're live when the ignition is off?

Ok, I think I'm a little closer...my bike's wiring diagram shows a red wire going from the igniter to the coils...is this the wire I want to cut into and redirect to the relay?
The diagram also shows a red wire connecting the two red coil wires to the engine shutoff switch. I'm starting to think that that's the wire I want to cut into.
Thanks in advance for any advice, and sorry for all these newbie questions.

that most likely is the one do you have any way of checking for voltage.

yeah, I have a multi-meter. Do I touch the red lead to the wire and the black lead to the bike frame?

If you got a 4 cyl. bike look for the one that splits to two wires if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The coil mod instructions make it sound like the two wires are going to join the single wire right above the valve cover, but looking at the wires, they both go into the main wiring harness and it looks like they go all the way back to the battery/electrical area.

just wondering why you feel the need for adding the relay, are you having issues with the bike?

Still recovering, some days are better than others.
