Hey Everybody.......

So my horn is not working...

The symptom was no horn, but when I push the switch down I can hear a clicking noise.

I pulled the tank and cleaned the contacts with some sandpaper. Reconnected the wires and still had the same symptom. All lights work so I am wondering what could cause this.

My horn worked until I brought it into the shop to get the cam plugs changed.

The way most Kawasaki's horns are wired is that the horn button gives the horn(s) a ground.

It might be worth the time to upgrade the horns to something louder, using your old horn circuit to power a relay. Here's some idea's from Griot's Garage website:

Down and dirty quick test....

Run a jumper wire from the battery or a good frame ground to the left handle bar control...

Press horn, yes/no worky?

If yes, then have a bad ground to the switch or the left control isn't grounding on the bars well enough...

If not, with the left control open, touch the other side of the switch with the jumper ground... Worky?
Then faulty switch or ground connection to switch input missing, ground not getting through...

With an OHM meter/DVM, does the switch measure continuity when depressed?

I just had this occur on my bike, due relocation of new mirror mounts, lost ground contact via the bars... Wiggle the contact, worky.... Bars are black painted/anodized or what ever the hell they are.... Sand paper to clean metal where the control clamps to the bar, all worky fine now.....

Let us know how it goes....

I wonder if the clicking that he hears is a relay?
Maybe there is already another upgraded horn in an its relay is working, but the horns came undone.

I am going to diagnose the issue tonight. It worked really well before going to the shop. It is a SPARTAN horn, I think it is original.

THe horn wires went from a recangular box under the gas tank to the horn. Anyone direct me to a wiring diagram or lay out a diagram for me to refernece.

I know the Ron has a KZ 1000 ST.

Here's a link including a couple of 1980 KZ1000's which may include a helpful wiring diagram.

Navagate to Filebase under KZ Information, go to 1980 models, select bike, and download wiring diagram.

Or just click here > 1980 KZ models

By the way, can test horn function with test wires from the horn terminals directly to battery terminals.

Some horns have a center screw adjustment, while others don't. With center screw adjuster present, just connect horn directly to battery and turn the adjuster screw a little one way and then the other to see if the horn comes alive.

Good Luck! :)

The rectangular box may be a relay activated by the handlebar horn button. Whereby full battery power to the horn is provided through the relay.

Good Luck! :)
