Headlight not working... Solved was created by vincentmoy
So... so the headlight of my 80 KZ750 is not working. It was fine 2 weeks ago when I bought it. But it has been sitting outside for a week or so and today when I started it I realized the headlight is not on.

I tried to switch between Hi/Lo with no avail. The wire looks good though.

FYI other lights work just fine.

Any ideas?

Is the bulb burned out? Did you check the fuse?

Check your fuse box. This should be the first thing you always check if you have lights not working or other electrical failure.

Would test voltage on the three-way connector inside the headlight shell where the three prongs at rear of bulb fit into.

If voltage is at the connector but headlight doesn't burn, likely needs a replacement bulb.

Unusual for both low and high beam filaments in the headlight bulb to simultaneously burn out.

Could also check charging voltage across battery terminals to assure voltage regulator is okay and not allowing too much voltage. Look for 12+ volts at idle and 14-15 volts at 4000 rpm.

Good Luck! :)

On some of the larger older 4's it will be in a holder with several fuses under a translucent cover under the seat or nearby.

On some bikes it might be in a small black case with the word "Fuses" I'd imagine if the fuse is bad/broken a good auto parts store will have replacement 10-20 amp AGX fuses (they are 1" long, anything else won't fit the clips).

Ok, just looked @ the fuse box and indeed one of the fuse burned out (the red-blue wire one)

I swapped a good fuse (the one in the middle) into it and now the tail and the front turn signal light would stay on.

BUT

No headlight still:(

The blue wire end clip and metal part of fuse look so badly corroded there may not be electrical contact between them whereby no current is flowing through the fuse and would perhaps not flow through a new uncorroded fuse. Imo, both a fresh blue wire end clip and fresh fuse should be fitted.

The red wire end clip doesn't look all that great either.

The white wire end clips look okay.

Regardless, for the headlight to light, voltage is required at the three piece connector where the bulb prongs fit into (as earlier mentioned).

Good Luck! :)

Where can I get those clips? Just a normal auto store?

If there is enough of the origional metal clip left, you can just brush it up real good with a steel wire brush, BBQ brush, whatever. The end result should be nice an shiny surfaces on both the fuse ends and clips.

Then use some di-electric sparkplug grease (or vaseline :P )on the connectors before you snap it all back together.

Cheers.

Have you even tried to see if jeff stocks them at z1enterprises.com? If not and you have to replace those wires for sure go a different route with the square fuses which of course would mean that you would have to do some modding. But at 21 bucks or whatever these sell for you would be ok to replace it.
Although the wires don't look burnt so maybe you will get off with just cleaning the contacts really nice and using that lubricant/grease and be done with it.
