dyna s timing question. z650B1 was created by GalwayZ
The instructions that come with the Dyna S specify dynamic timing with a strobe should be done using the advance marks and be set at 2500 rpm -
Mine was initially set static as per instructions and when i checked with a strobe it does not hit full advance untill 3500 rpm (give or take 100 rpm or so.)
Timing marks line up spot on at idle.

Does anybody know

A.If i should change to 2500 rpm as Dyna suggest - or leave it where it is.
B.Why there is such a difference - 1000 rpm seems like a lot ?

Bike is stock - except for Dyna S, Dyna coils and wires.

When I installed the Dyna on my 650 I went with the static timing which was spot on. Bike starts and runs so good I've never checked with a timing light (I should though). Make sure your advance mech is lubed (make sure wieghts move smoothly) and works properly.

2500 RPM is probably a minimum. What you're really looking for is full advance whatever RPM that is. Somewhere deep in the archives are my comments after installing my first one. One thing I recall was being sure to read completely through the instructions before installing it as at least one step seemed out of sequence.

My 550 manual specifies when full advanced should be reached. Have you checked your manual?

Normally, as the advance springs wear out, the advance starts too early and is all-in too early. Maybe someone replaced the springs with some from another model?

How are you measuring the RPMs?

The Dyna-S replaces the points to repeatedly ground and unground the coil primary windings.

With Dyna-S, have always successfully used the same ignition timing method by aligning the F mark with the case timing mark at idle rpm. Which achieves the best idle.

And let the advancer unit continue doing what it's supposed to do as MaKaw intended.

Imo, it's unnecessary to be concerned with the advance marks except watching them to assure proper operation of the advancer when the rpm's are varied by blipping the throttle.

Good Luck! :)

Thanks -

Bike idles fine and pulls hard - advance unit is working fine -

considering that and the fact that the timing marks line up bang on at idle - i'll leave things be !

if it aint broke - dont fix it!

Also worth a mention

if it jams - force it!

if it breaks - it was due for replacement anyway.

Thanks again.
