LED's on the KZ
21 Feb 2009 20:06
I would like to put LED turn signals on my KZ, but what should I worry about when changing over to LED. because I plan on using cluster lights also for the brake lights.

Get a flasher for LED's as the standard types require resistance to work properly.

If you get the plug and play 1157 replacement LEDs with multiple LEDs on the 1157 base they come with the resistor built into the base so (theoretically) you can use the standard flasher.

I would need two flashers correct?

1) They don't draw enough current to make a standard bimetallic flasher flash.
2) The "stop light" indicator on the dash might blink if yours has a detector for a blown brake light. The impedance of the LED circuit is too high and the detector reads it like an open filament.

Tuen signals only need one flasher. It is wired from 12V to the center contact of the turn signal switch which selects either TS bulb. That way you only need one flasher.I would need two flashers correct?

The resistor built in is the current limiter for the LED. The unit does NOT draw enough current to run a standard flasher. I have the 3W LED's on mine now, and you do need a solid state flasher. If you get the plug and play 1157 replacement LEDs with multiple LEDs on the 1157 base they come with the resistor built into the base so (theoretically) you can use the standard flasher.

This auction is for one (1) NEW Universal Electronic
Speed Adjustable LED Flasher Relay.
Can be used for 6 Volt or 12 Volt NEGATIVE Ground Systems.
The LED Flasher Relay is tested and includes two (2) Spade
and one (1) Ring Crimp Terminal C/W Hookup Drawing.
This Electronic LED Flasher Relay will fix the rapid flashing of
the newer LED lights. You no longer require Current Limiting
Resistors that heat up and can be a fire hazzard.
The flash rate of this Electronic LED Flasher relay can be easily
adjusted by cutting one (1) to three (3) black loop wires
until you achieve the exact Flash Rate that suits your needs.
Of course this relay can replace any defective 2 or 3 pin standard
flasher relay that uses standard bulbs or LED/Bulb combinations.
Does this sound like it would work

I replaced ALL of my bulbs on my GPZ1100 with LEDs. I bought two flashers from my local ato parts store for $4.60 each. One for the turn signals and one for the emergency flashers. You do have to replace both. The bulbs do not come with the resistor built in. The resistor is an extra component you would have to clip to your flasher, if you want to use your old flasher. The tail light is also a custom built led unit and it is a plug and play. The only thing that you MUST watch is the polarity. If the system is reversible.

Here it is on the bike. The rear side running lights are also LEDs. All I did there was install front turn signals which take the dual element bulbs and spliced the extra wire into my tail light (not the brake light)
