total loss ignition set up??? was created by trianglelaguna
years back my roomate and i had a mock roadracer. We would run around the neighborhood and talk of really taking it to a track....talk...it was really just a chassis, motor, bodywork , controls, coils ,battery, ignition, and handle bars ...really stripped down...he set it up with an inline fuse snap connector that ran power from a charged battery to the coils????and the ignition brain (dyna circa 84) wired through to the coils also...you put the fuse in with a charged battery and bump started it...
anyone know more??? i want to put somthing like it on my kz1000j as i work on it to run around the block once in a while..it came to me missing a lot of the electric,,,and i have an extra dyna 111 complete...any help would be great(i know it's kinda rigged for now) peace and thanks craig..
or i just save and rebuild it as a street bike...

Am thinking sole purpose of battery was to supply voltage to the coils, and the fuse simply allowed disconnecting battery from coils (akin to switching off a normal ignition).

The Dyna electronic ignition requires battery voltage, whereas points do not.

As I understand the total loss system, only the coils and electronic ignition use voltage from the battery. So the battery charging components are left unused, those being the alternator (aka stator or generator), rectifier and voltage regulator.

While the electric starter motor may be retained and used, it may also be removed to shed further weight. Besides, using the starter would likely suck up way too much of the available battery storage otherwise available for the coils and ignition.

With a total loss system, a kick starter should still be functional.

Good Luck! :)

jusy hook it like normal and charge your battery a lot the dyna needs at least 11 volts to run properly i have run that same set-up for years just don't plan on any long trips also you might want to move up to a dyna s instead because the dyna 3 booster does use abit more power.

The Dyna III and Dyna S are not recommended for use with the stock electronic ignition coils. They require 3 ohms or higher, according to Dyna. (Although, some have used them with 2.5 ohm coils.)

The other problem with the Dyna III or Dyna S is that they both use about 3 times as much power, (wasted as heat at lower RPMs), as the stock electronic ignition. This is not good if you are going total-loss.

If you plan on keeping the Dyna III, you'll probably want to get the charging system working well.

o.k maybe i'll see what the stock elec brain looks like(ignitor???) i might have got them in the boxes that came with it...the stock elec pick up plate and advance and nib are on it now...
yes the dyna will burn up coils at least mine did ..you guys helped me earlier this year when my bike kept burning coils and i was putting cop bike ones cheap off e-bay and re-burning em..i got some of the green dyna 3ohms and it's run great ever since as far as spark goes...
i also gotta not leave the key on ever cuase i read that the coils and set up are cooking away when the key is on .....thanks and i'll keep that in mind..stock elec ign.and stock coils for now...now to figure out how to wire it...give er a go....peace and thanks

Yes, unfortunately true on the Dyna III and Dyna S.
But not true on the stock Kaw electronic ignition (another benefit of the stock system).

Good luck, keep us posted.

Did you get the total loss system finished, I'm looking at doing the same to my 550.

I have ran total loss systems on almost all of my z's for years. I use a battery out of a cb125 honda (it's small an light) One ground wire, one hot wire to the key, one wire from key to coil/ignition. Everything else is removed, depending on the motor, I may or may not leave the stator on.

I just removed the stator, rotor & the r/r. Also did the WG coil mod. I'm keeping most of the stock wiring so I can have the kill switch.
