starter makes that cat on a hot manifold sound
29 Sep 2008 10:31
Hi all,
I have a KZ1100 A1, and every time I hit the start button I get a loud whine that sounds like, well you know.
Starter still turns the engine but not very well. She'll whine, then turn what sounds like a full revolution, followed by more whining, more turning until she finaly fires.
The starter that's on it is a SM-226-K That's a 2 brush system.
I took the starter appart and cleaned it. Brushes still have lots of meat on them.
Going through the manual it states that the armature should have high and low spots. I can't really feel/see any differences.
Has anybody run into this issue before? any other starters that would fit or can recommends some kind of fix for this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

The over running clutch for the starting system(behind the rotor of the stator or alternator) has small springs that weaken over time. These push against rollers that provide the torque to start the engine.
The shop manual will show how to get to them.

Thanks Mfolks,
I've already gotten to the starter clutch. I had one broken tab? what the spring sits in and I fixed that.
The springs appeared to have plenty of bounce.

It is the starter itself making the noise,, usually makes a howling sound. The bushings are dry and probably worn. I took mine apart and cleaned it and lubed the bearings with never seize, do the ones in the drive end too. After 2 years it is starting to make the noise again slightly.
There were rebuild kits on ebay for 40 some dollars or rebuild starters for 160 some dollars.
And others say a honda starter works better,, you have do some work to get the cable to fit it though.
Good luck

Thanks Milkman,
Where are the bushing you're refering to? I'll try lubing the bearings and see if that helps.
Any idea if it's possible to pull the starter without removing the the carbs?
Thanks again
