Petcock Issues

Petcock Issues was created by DagoTrojan
Judging from a recent tech article in a magazine, I'm guessing the "vacuum petcocks" like those on my recently acquired '81 550 LTD have some problems. This seems borne out by the fact that mine has plastic petcocks on both the main and reserve fuel lines (I noticed that when they were left open, the carbs would leak fuel when sitting).

Methinks this is a short-term fix, and I'm concerned the plastic 'cocks won't pass state inspection. Is there a better solution? Can I change out the standard 'cock for simpler (that is, "On, Off, Reserve" 'cock like those on my dirt bikes) solution?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Check out this link

You can measure your mounting bolt distance on the gas tank and buy an adapter plate, probably the 34mm one. Get the petcock of choice and a little filing of the tank and your all set. I did mine for about $35. Well worth it. Remember to cap off the vacuum outlet on the carb.

Thanks... I'm going to do some more exploring to see how this thing really works.

I grew up with on/off petcocks so it is no bother to me. I trust them more too. But my brother can't stand them as he has to remember to turn on and turn off and he figures the less he has to remember the better. I think he has a small harddrive.:pinch:
