Melted airbox hose

Any idea what would cause this? This is a project bike, and the hoses on cylinders 1 and 2 have an oily black build up on them, with number 1 having severe deformation due to melting. There was also an improper seal around hose 1.

Not only are they nasty dirty, the rubber on hose 1 and 2 is hard and plastic like.

Backfiring, my kz550 was doing the same thing when I bought it, melted two of the hose the same way, z1enterprises.com has the hoses. Mine were $40. Also, the originals tend to dry and shrink over the years, causing a poor seal to the carbs.

This probably doesn't help either. Looks like someone attacked it with a screwdriver trying to take it out earlier. No matter, we're gonna put pods on there anyway.
