The carbs may have the proper throat size to match up well with the 550, which is all that matters as long as the ports match up. However it really doesn't mean anything that the displacement would be nearly the same. I don't know much about the similarities (or lack thereof) personally, but possibly different heads, possibly different bore x stroke, possibly different cams..

The difference in bore alone, within a limit, really doesn't seem to change a whole lot for an engine as far as jetting is concerned. I am running the same main jets that a 550 with pods and 4-1 runs, while I have a 615 kit as well.

Also just as an example of model specific tuning, the 26mm CV carbs on an M1 550 runs 120 mains stock, while the nearly identical 27mm carbs on an A1/A2 GPz 550 run 114 mains stock. Same displacement, yet the more powerful engine runs smaller mains in 1mm larger carbs.

Besides, installing a set of mechanical slide carbs would be a downgrade and not worth the effort.

I like the mechanical slide carbs. They're easier to tune since there are fewer variables with them, and they're dirt cheap. The CV carb's diaphragms cost a bundle. But, if you want more power, you need the CVs, as Travis said, and the slide carbs require knowing how to roll the throttle.

I little off topic but I was able to order jets for my bike directly from Kawi Canada...course they were for an 82 KZ440 G1.
