Explain what you mean by performance and tuning? Performance as in "go-fast" and tuning as in "ease of tuning"? Or do you mean something else. The early Z1 is better for go-fast and the later 28 for ease of tuning.

well, i'm not a kid anymore..don't need the speed. i guess what i meant is..which one for more reliable and stable running? i just want a bike that runs smooth with minimum fuss. i have been messing with these 1974/75 variety 28's for awhile now...with no luck.

Well then, the 28s with the accelerator pump are the most likely option if you are sick of fussing with Z1 carbs. These 28s had to have pumps installed because the jetting was so lean that they didn't work well off idle. You might find 76/77 VM26s a bit more to your liking. Jetting wasn't leaned out by EPA mandate and they both are easy to tune and stay in sync. They also develop more power through mid-range and at lower rpms. The 28s with pumps have the potential to develop more power at the top if jetted correctly. As with most things, there are plusses and negatives to any set of carbs.
