Alright.
I went ahead and blocked the hole up. I tapped it and used a small set screw. after resynching the carbs and adjusting the air screw, #4 is now firing like it's supposed to!!! YAY!!!!!!!

That just leaves #1. Still same issue. Seems to run fine with a little throttle twist, but won't fire at idle. Hmmmmmmmmm....

Well, #4 seemed to be a missing part in the carb. As for #1. I'm not quite sure whats going on with that one just yet.

So, it looks like I have (had) two issues. They seem to have the same result, just different causes. One I have figured out.

More to come... I'm sure..

I had to remove all those brass bals to clean an old set of carbs once so I replaced them with tiny lead fishing weights .I just tapped them into the holes .

I never thought of a fishing weight. That's a good idea.

The other good news is that "shake" effect is gone. That was the one that really bugged me. Now that I have figured it out, it makes sence. Shaking the bike caused the gas in the float bowl to wave back and forth, blocking up that hole temporarily allowing normal operation to resume for a second until the hole opened back up and extra air got back into the cuircut. Makes perfect sence in retrospec...

Now for #1. The low compression reading is starting to worry me now. By holding my hand on the back of the carb (choking it out a little bit) #1 will pop in. Still won't idle right, though.

Glad you fixed the #4 carb. If you put your hand over the #1 carb and obstruct air flow, and it kicks in, the #1 carb is lean at idle. This means that the idle circuit is plugged. You mentioned you went through the carb cleaner drill but he fact remains, it isn't getting enough gas at idle. Adjust the air/fuel mixture via the air screw or reclean the carburetor. The bike isn't getting enough gas at idle and this can only be because of obstruction in the idle circuit or the air screw is misadjusted to my thinking...

The cruel irony of all this is that just as I am getting this thing figured out, we got three inches of snow last night.

Who says God doesn't have a sence of humor? ;)
