My 1977 KZ650B had been sitting under a cover in the garage for 10 years. I stupidly put it away with gas in the tank. Last few months have been a blur of tank cleaning, carb cleaning, cleaning, fixing the front caliper, etc. Carbs on, a float needle got some gunge on it, carbs off, stripped a pilot jet, carbs on, the overflow is cracked, carbs off. Rinse and repeat.

Last week I managed to get it started and heard some ungodly primary chain noise. I remember hearing that stupid chain in the past, and didn't think anything of it, even though it was louder than I remember. I also didn't remember it being as hard to start as it was. Once it warmed up though, it sounded alright. Less chain knocking, but it was still there.

Fast forward to today and I try to sync the carbs. Carb 4, nearly zero vacuum. Spray some carb cleaner on the engine side boot, engine revs. I can wiggle the boot by hand. The bottom screw was half in. Carbs have to come off again. I have no one to blame but myself.

Was it doing morse code in slaps telling you the boot was loose? Did you leave a giant plot point out of your story?

No it was slapping because of the air leak. The chain slaps when the carbs are badly out of sync.
