Obtained rack of carbs with individual air cleaners, advice?
28 Sep 2025 21:04
carbs for 1982/3 GPZ 550, included were 4 individual air cleaners. I am guessing since they would flow more air, there'd be a need to change some jets and perhaps needle for a richer mixture.
I have no idea if that was done, the carbs may be stock. So short of disassembling them, I could install and see what happens, they appear to be in good condition.
So two possibilities, install with stock airbox, install with pods. Which would you do first?
Obviously if I installed with stock airbox and it runs good, no jet changes were done. If there are jet changes for richer mixture I would expect if the engine started it would bog down similar to leaving the choke on and eventually stop. If that happens then install the individual filters and see how it runs.
If I install with pods and it runs, obviously changes were made to carbs to make them run richer, but if it still has stock jetting I am guessing it likely won't even start, maybe pop a few times but refuse to fire up.
Or .... what do you say?
I didn't set out looking for these individual air cleaners, the carbs I found happened to have them included.

I say remove a float bowl (four screws) and see what jets are in there. Then the choice will be clear.
Also, you can see if the carbs really are clean.
