SAS,....Special air service ;-)
02 May 2025 06:42
The initial situation is that the mixture on all four carburetors on my A1 is a very little bit too rich, and I can't make it leaner with the air adjustment screw. I'd like to avoid the hassle of removing the otherwise perfectly functioning carburetors and installing smaller pilot jets.
( I really hate this carburetor removing and re-mounting and the fumbling with the inlet-rubbers just for little things like that, and also all the 4 bowls removing with the carbs installed, i´ve done that too often
So I'm simply trying to give the engine a little more "air"...in the form of a homemade/modified air filter with more air flow...
I still had some special, fine-pored air filter foam lying around from previous air filter designs on other bikes i´ve done in the past...
Ad first, I formed + cutted a base plate from a thin sheet of stainless steel. I also bought a coarse-mesh stainless steel mesh and used it to form the outer and inner wire inserts (so the foam wouldn't suddenly disappear into the intake tract when I suddenly full open the throttle ).
The outer steelmesh and the groundplatte will weld together, between this to "inlayers", i´ve put the foam,..and ready is the new filter insert for the regulary airbox. -
After that,..i´ve had the idea, to disangage an original filter element, und just change the foldet paperfilter to my special filter-foam...and i´ve done it.
Next week, i will try them both out on a "testdrive"...and i will report it here, how it works....

Nice air filter build but you should use some K&N air filter oil to catch and bind the dust........

Sure, thats selfunderstanding by use on foam-filters.
( I´ve had a look around on all known offering sites the last weeks, for the original K&N replacement filter for the KZ1000, KA-8077,..but they are not available, or, some storrage unit for an exorbitant price,..so i will first give my 2 self constructions a chance...if they don´t work satisfactorily, i have the options to buy this K&N,..or depart the carbs for some other pilot jet combinations,...( But it's not a real, or major, problem with the slightly too rich mixture. The engine runs smoothly and perfectly in all speed ranges, and as shown , my vacuum gauges also show a nearly perfect sign..)

I'm just back from my "air filter test drive":<br />I first tested the version with the original air filter, i had fitted with filter foam. The engine runs very well at all speeds and RPM`S, and the spark plugs already look relatively good. (I was driving on the highway at medium to high speeds, and RPM´s between 4000-7000)
sure,..still a very little bit black ,..but visible pistons and valves are "clean"...(( i run on this KZ1000 a couple of VM26 from a KZ900, with 17,5 pilots and 115 mains,..and air screw is now 2 1/4 out,)
... i am nearly satisfied with this result, as the engine runs well,...little bit thirsty,... but accellerations is very good, no hazzle, no misfires, everything as it should...
Next days, i will give the other selfmade filter a chance, that one will let a little more air through...i will than report here also..
I also realize that I should choose a slightly smaller pilot jet size for the 900 carburettor on the 1000cc engine, roughly size 15 (same cross-section in the intake tract, but larger displacement, which increases gas velocity and creates more suction at the jets, so they can be a bit smaller...it's the same with the VM 26 on the 1000cc models, with 15 pilot jets and mains 112.5),... but I'm still hoping that I can finally fix it with more "air"...otherwise, the 15 pilot jets will be needed
I just have fun with that kind of experiments...
