Hello
       There is a small tube under the choke plunger and it has two small holes for gas to enter. Does anyone know if it is wise to use a small wire to clear the holes? I imagine that blowing air from the top is the easier method. Plus the holes are very small in size. If you had a small enough wire then you could poke up from the bottom of the tube and run it up inside the tube.

Using a can of spray carb cleaner, put the straw inside the hole at the bottom of the choke plunger cavity, and shoot.  You should see fuel come out the bottom of the brass pick up tube, and also two streams from cross drilled holes just above the gasket surface.  If any of the holes are plugged, you have crud inside the carb passages.  You should make sure the passages are clean; use carb dip.  If after all that the holes are still plugged, use a small piece of wire to open the holes.

Some additional procedures i always perform on the VM carbs. Like Ed mentioned, you can pull plunger and shoot Carb Cleaner, using provided straw, to shoot down that plunger cast hole. But i always just pull the brass pick-up tube. Why?? Because the P/U tube is a tube with a flat slug swagged on the lowest point, then drilled with an approx #75 twist bit thru the center. What can happen is crud will collect around that "drilled slug" inside the tube. You won't see it from the outside but chemicals will soften up the gunk but chunks can remain lodged in there causing fits later of starting. A sort of capillary effect of old fuel.      Or just grab an old lighter and remove the spring and use it. I like the little twist bits because it uniformly shapes/cleans the little hole. I use an 1/8" piece of aluminum tubing to pull. You don't want to just ham-fist grab the tube with toothed pliers, sleeve it first with tubing. Then twist and pull straight out. Might note/measure original assembled protrusion length between casting and end of tube before you pull it/them. I use a rope of 000 steel wool to internally clean the tube. All this may be overkill but you'll be assured it's clean.. Reassembly use a "Plastic" tool to squarely compression set tube back in place. Not too hard pounding or you'll split the tube and that slug will fall out. Have Fun!!

to carefully "pierce" the hole, I used a single "wire hair" from a wooden hand-held steel brush, which I carefully pulled out with pliers. It was about 0.25-0.3 millimeters in diameter. It had worked mostly, except, when the brass tube was too heavy corrodet,..then it´s necessary, to clean the channels first with a good carb cleaner solution..

Thank you to everyone. Clay you have a great idea on how to carefully remove and clean this tube. I will have to do some scouting around in order to find that one eighth aluminum tubing. I am not sure what it is that you do with the lighter and I am trying to imagine a way that I can create a soft plastic tool to protect the tube when reinstalling it.

I am really enjoying my journey here learning how I can safely restore and maintain the integrity of these fantastic machines! So when I am cruising on my bike I will be in awe and gratitude to the people here on this forum !
