❤️1977-78 kz1000 carbholder repair

Hello!       I am curious if anyone has ever been able to remove and replace the brass or bronze bearings that are inside he aluminum casting called the carburetor holder bracket? I know this is probably a task that requires some very specialized tools. Then there is the task of finding a replacement. Then there is the task of properly installing it too! When I look at the ends of the bearings it looks as though there are metal rings that are on each end. Anyway I am hoping somebody might be able to help me with my quest here. b

In all of the carb racks that I have done ,I have not seen them worn to the point of needing replacement. However I do pop out the metal rings and replace the felt washers that are behind those rings. Im sure those bronze bushings could be sourced. The should just press out. If yours are worn try to press them out and measure the od and Id.

Why not just buy a new used bracket?  Post up some photos of what you have, and me, and likely others, can look in their parts stack for a match.

BTW, replacing the brass/bronze bushings would be a project, indeed.  You would need to fashion a tool to remove the old bushing.  Then, make a new bushing, press it in place, and find a way to ream it.  Not a simple project.

If it helps. From 1972 to 1980 Mikuni basically had 3 different styles of casting carb brackets. The earlier 72-75 utilized (2) bronze bushings, starting in 1976 thru 1980 they utilized 3. Takes about 5 minutes to pull each of those out. But like Crazy mentioned, i've never found it necessary. Also like Crazy stated, i just pull the felt retainers for re-plating and blasting thru the bushings and holder. Then re-install stuff. For reference the throttle rods all shared the same size, just shy of 10mm. Bushings are 14mm OD. I only pull them if the bracket is warped or broken for spares. If You're having issues it's most likely crud or a warped holder assy. If when installing linkage rod and it seems to be hard to install, most likely a "dropped" assembly or mark of someone forcing carbs with prybars bending that holder.

I agree,..I've never had a bridge where repair/replacement of the bronze bushings was necessary.(But to be honest: I´ve never have had a totally rusted bike, i´ve found on the ground of a river..
Greetings, Joe

Thank you sir ! I do appreciate your time and your experience very much !
When you replace the felt washers do you also replace the small metal ring on the outside ? Do you put new felt washers in ?
Again thank you Clay ! 😃

I've never purchased any new felts but that's because i have plenty used ones worthy of repurpose. The retaining rings i simply re-zinc. But honestly that's just for glam and you really never see them. Just never try and use a conventional o-ring in replacement of a felt, you'll bind-up the assembly.
