Z1 carb lifters
23 Dec 2024 11:25
I remember a Gent that used to sell these choke lifters but can't seem to find that person. I've a gaggle of the late 1974-1975 carbs for the Z1's with a batch good metal choke backers eligible for whatever he did to recoat with plastic. That's it..

There was a guy in Germany (Achim) who did them but I'm pretty sure he's retired.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Maybe one of our "tech savy" members could generate a 3D print file for the plastic covers ??

There is a fellow in the US who does refurbs of choke levers. I bought from him recently but, unfortunately, I have misplaced his name.

That would be me. Achim did produce some units and I bought probably 10 when he was doing them. I had all those old units laying around so I started to experiment and ended up with a product that was in my opinion pretty good. Better than throwing them away and they look good compared to the cracked ones you always find, Time consuming but worth the effort. One of you guys suggested I could re-plate the metal but that would add to much to the final product and most would polish out nicely.
Your carbs look great by the way.

Well there You are! Yup, it was me asking about the plating too. A Friend from North Carolina bought one of those from you i believe off ebay a while back. Do You still do that? Is it injection moulding?

This sounds like a good approach. Might have to print it in two pieces, and glue the halves together, around the metal core.

If I told you how I do them , well I would have to hunt you down.
But if you must know I repair all the cracks and broken pieces if not to bad with an epoxy after cleaning the lettering then just paint and fill in the letters by hand and multiple layers of clear. Achim made his out of a SS blank and then molded the plastic around the blank then probably hand painted the letters and arrows. Anyone could do it if they have the patience and a steady hand. A lot of the time you get that top piece of the arrow broken off so I clean the broken areas with small Dremel cutters/shapers and build up a new one with epoxy. I under cut all of the cracks to get a very good bond for the epoxy to the existing plastic and metal. If one is careful not to put too much pressure on them when opening and closing I'm sure they will last a long time. The ones on a few of my bikes are holding top very well. It's time consuming and really can't make any money if you consider the time it takes but is fun. If the plating is in good condition(most are)it can be polished to a bright shine.
If someone has a few of them or even one I would do them.
