putting RS34 flat slides on a 1980 kz 1000
08 Dec 2024 13:16
hello I am wanting to put a new set of RS34 flat slides on my 1980 Z1 classic that has been converted for carbs. it has dyna S ignition , air pods, and a open kerker on it. can anyone tell me if these carbs are compatible and if so will they need to be jetted differently.

I think that is as large as I would go on a stock engine. They may be a bit too big. The answer to your jetting question depends on how they are jetted now.

That "out of the box" jetting is a good place to start. Every engine is going to be slightly different depending on compression, ignition, etc.
With a stock 1000 that seems about right. I ran RS34's on my 831cc 650 a few Summers ago, 20 pilots and 122.5 mains with pipe/pods. The head on that engine flows more than a stock GPZ1100 and makes about 85-90 HP.
Do a high speed plug chop to set the mains, check plug color, etc. I would use a ColorTune kit to set idle if you have access to one.
You can do a search on here as well for recommendations on those carbs.

We put a set of RS 34 D21 K carbs on the 77' KZ 1000 LTD. The place wanted to know if the motor was stock, points or electronic ignition, air box or pods, stock exhaust or 4 into 1 exhaust?
Installed the RS 34's and it ran great right out of the box. Stock motor, Dyna ignition, K&N pods and a Delkevik 4 into 1 exhaust. They came with spare jets bigger and smaller than the installed jets but they are still in the box.
We got RS 36's for the 80' Suzuki GS 1100E from the same place with the same results. The RS carbs really woke up both bikes.

As others have already posted, the RS34's "should" work on your relatively stock combination. I ran a set of 34's on my stock bore KZ1000 back in the day, although it had a mildly ported head, .380 lift cams with stock valve sizes. It was a nice combination with sharp throttle response. I'll see if I can dig up my jetting specs for you on that combo.
Just one thing to consider (working from memory here - somebody correct me if I'm wrong) - you'll need to use the larger J-style mounting spigots (manifolds) to mount those 34's. Being larger in inside diameter than the stock KZ1000 manifolds, you'll end up with a step in your intake tract at the mounting surface of the cylinder head - no bueno as far as airflow is concerned. If the head is off of the motor, no problem as the ports can be matched to the manifolds. Just something to consider....

hello thanks for the info on putting RS34 flatslides on my stock kz1000 I think I may have a problem finding the right carb holders for those carbs I have a 1980 kz1000G . I removed the fuel injection system and had put 26mm mikuni on the original head. I was able to use the original carb holders for them ..the bolt pattern is smaller ...53mm all the carb holders I have looked at are 60mm .looking for some help.

28 Jan 2025 16:15 - 28 Jan 2025 17:01I was unaware that those heads used a different spacing.hello thanks for the info on putting RS34 flatslides on my stock kz1000 I think I may have a problem finding the right carb holders for those carbs I have a 1980 kz1000G . Are you sure its 53 and not 58mm? I would double check that number.
54mm is the same C-C spacing that the 650/750 uses and you have to slot the 900/1000 manifolds to fit those on a 650 head to mount VM26 carbs.
The 1000 manifolds I have here are 58mm and the 60mm GPZ1100 manifolds fit any early model Z1 head.
If it is 54mm spacing GPZ750 manifolds will work because I used some on my 650 when I fit RS34's on it (#16065-1132)
I believe if you had VM26 carbs on it then 60mm GPZ1100 manifolds are what your after (#16065-1135)
