OK so here's my dumb question for the day:  Checking float level with the clear tube, is it 1/8" down from the float bowl gasket surface or from the lip at the bottom of the carb body?  Illustration in the FSM looks like it's from the bottom edge of the lip.

The mating surface of the bowl and body. 2-4mm. So aim for 3mm.

Z1000J2 somewhat modified!

if curius on what the float height is i did this test .It is a very good test to check if the float valve leaks and at what height the floatvalve opens. My carbs had a height at 25mm at 25,5mm they leak.
Here is a link to the test i use  from themotorcyclemd .

Thanks Ed.  I couldn't decide if the FSM was referring to the bottom of the body or the top edge of the float bowl.  And then I started overthinking it...

The datum is the bottom edge of the carb body.

What manual is that illustration from?

The Z1 'White' FSM reads "About 1/8" " there.  The ambiguous "About" always drove slmjim nuts.  Still does.

I always set it just to the top of the split washer on the bowl screw.
