Anybody know what this is? And what it does? Spring lever upside down under the carbs. Pushes up but springs back down.

Accelerator pump. Twisting the throttle should move the lever. To see if it is working, remove a filter and peek inside as you twist the throttle. You should see a small squirt of fuel.

Just in case. You should see a small squirt of fuel... in each carburetor. see the manual for other details.

From the pic posted it appears that this set of carbs has both a pump and a sensor. As I understand it one of the things the sensor does is only allow fuel out of the pump if the engine is running (providing vacuum)

Thanks for all the great info fellas! I just picked up a 79 KZ650... B3 I think... it's black with the green and yellow striping. Pretty good condition overall but the engine is sounding a bit off, and I suspect it's running lean overall - so was wondering if that lever connected to the carbs had anything to do with it.

A 650 with accel pump with sensor, I had read/heard that some of them did have both but had not seen one or worked on one. The pic you posted showed pod filters not air box, so I would think some jetting changes from stock would be required. Any idea what jets are in it now?
