I have  '82 KZ1000J, When syncing the carbs the screw is held in place with a 3/8" nut.
What are you using to hold and tighten that nut? Special tool? Crowfoot?

Edit: thanks to TexasKZ for correcting my mistake.

This is what I use. You do need to use an auxiliary tank however.

I never knew they were so cheap, when I had my Harris (many years ago before the Internet) I made one by welding a cheap 1/4 drive socket to a bent piece of 6mm rod and passed a screw driver through the socket

Not the save all you might think, at least on my Big fours, the upper frame rail position will not allow you to get straight on the adjuster of carb 2 & 3. I use a stubby screwdriver and an m8 wrench. I have the one Cra-z1 posted

Same one we use.  Cane from Motion Pro many years ago. Aux tank and a big floor fan completes the stationary tuning setup.

Mama Kaw offered a Z1-specific, VM28SC carb sync tool (PN# 57001-120) individually, that was also part of the Z1 shop tool set that enables the stock tank to be in place while syncing Z1 carbs.  The convenience of being able to do so is somewhat offset by the notable discomfort of working in very close proximity to the hot intake cam cover.  We've seldom used it since obtaining the tool like Cra-z1 linked to.  Mechanic's gloves help.
