KZ 650 SR will not run without some choke was created by bugkiller82
1978 KZ 650 SR no air box and 4 into 1 header, jet size 107.5.
The bike came set up this way and had not run in over 10 years.
Remove carbs cleaned and used the same jets and pilot screws.
Set pilot screws at 1 1/8 turn as manual stated.
The bike runs now but will not idle without choking, even after warm-up.
So I'm asking do the pilot screws need adjusting/ opened up more.
The fuel tank is cleaned and coated, the filter is on, and new lines.
New plugs.
Thanks for any help.

Install the airbox and clean the carbs properly.  Also, replace all the various carb O-rings and float bowl gaskets.

First as I understand it for the 78 650 SR, there was a D1 and a D1a offered that year.  The main difference is the size of carbs that came stock on them.  The D1 came with vm24ss carbs that to the best of my knowledge came with an air screw only.  The D1A came with vm22ss carbs that only came with a pilot screw. You indicate your carbs have pilot screw, so are they vm22ss carbs?  If they are they should have an oblong port like structure at about 10 o'clock in the intake bell of each carb.

Since it will not idle with the pilot screws set 1 1/8 I would attempt to increase the pilot air to fuel ratio by turning the pilot screws  out some more (1/8 to 1/4) see if it will idle without the enricher/choke  engaged.

If your carbs are properly set up....correct float height, proper synch, etc....Nessism is right.  You need a proper air box.  Without it your bike is getting too much air and not enough gas at idle.  Using the choke adds gas, which is why the bike will idle correctly with the choke on.  The larger main jets won't help at all when the bike is idling.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Here's a photo that shows 22mm carbs.
