Mikuni VM33 Rebuild Kits?
08 Jun 2022 06:13
A previous owner put A set of VM33 carbs on my 85 GSX-R750. I think that KZs came with these so I’m asking around: . Does anyone know of a rebuild kit for this carb? Most kits are sold based on make and model and I don’t know exactly what KZs were sold with these carbs. Thanks KZRiders.

No “kits” are available as far as I know. Most times the brass will be reusable, aka Jets,Floats, Needles and Seats, etc. most just need a good cleaning, new ORings and gaskets. Check the below for parts.

The VM33 Smoothbore carbs are aftermarket performance racing carbs and no KZ or other factory machine ever came with them fitted as stock.
There are no rebuild "kits" available and individual parts will have to be sourced from Mikuni dealers and other suppliers.

Re: Mikuni VM33 Rebuild Kits?
08 Jun 2022 07:07Those are considered aftermarket racing carburetors, they never came stock on Suzuki/Kawasaki etc. street bikes. They are a high performance carburetor. Most parts are still available from Mikuni, but some parts are no longer available.A previous owner put A set of VM33 carbs on my 85 GSX-R750. I think that KZs came with these so I’m asking around: . Agree with breaking down the carbs, cleaning with carb dip, then assembling with fresh O-rings and gaskets. Don't be afraid of unganging, since that's the only proper way to clean.

Thank you KZ riders for the information.
Z1 Enterprises
has everything I need that’s consumable. including a very cool float level gauge to fit that carb. After reading on your site I’m now wondering if it’s too big for my bike but it runs fine … at full throttle. Lol

After unganging a set of CB650C carbs for rebuilding I am very afraid. Lol. I think it took me an hour to get the spring and rods lined back up. But you’re right about it being the only way to do a good job. Got any videos or posts describing it for these carbs?

No videos. Slowly dismantle and take detailed photos. There is one spring on the shaft but it doesn’t need to come apart to ungang them. Take special note of the felt dust seals on the center of the shaft and their placement in relationship to the plastic spacer. They are pretty simple. The hardest part it getting the main jet holder aligned (jet block) correctly so the slide raises and lowers clean and smooth.

You may find more Suzuki model specific info here :
www.gixxer.com/forums/
Originally your bike came with Mikuni VM29SS carbs which are a small early version flat slide carb similar to the Mikuni RS34 flat slide.
Very often these original carbs were pirated off these bikes for use on other machines. The way forward was usually a set of Mikuni RS34 as a upgrade.
The original carbs are very sought after and in good condition command high resale value.

Make sure you support the float pivot boss while tapping out the float pin. They are a tight friction fit and you can snap off the float boss easily. I’ve used a socket under the boss with the carb on it’s side. Tap the pin into the socket with gentle light blows.

Here is a guide about the regular VM's...
gsarchive.bwringer.com/bikecliff/images/vm_carb_rebuild.pdf
I would not take the slide apart unless you need to change the needle position. Just use carb cleaner spray and make sure it's clean before reuse.

These guys will rebuild them for you if your budget would allow it. They quoted me $450 U.S. for a complete rebuild of my vm33s.
