Has anyone gotten rid of the 4 carb setup on the KZ900 and made a custom intake with a 2 carb setup or a big single? And if so, how’d you do it?

Maybe someone has, it's possible to accomplish, but why? There's going to be a lot more expertise and experience behind the stock carbs or common swaps.

Only practical application  for going to one carb is on a turbocharged  motor.

Not sure why you would consider this unless you want to puddle around with 60hp, poor throttle response and a rev ceiling of 7000rpm ( would get good gas mileage though). It has been widely recognised for the last sixty years that equal length intakes are at least as important as equal length header pipes to optimise performance from a naturally aspirated engine ( only achievable with individual carbs/ throttle bodies)
The list of disadvantages to a single or dual carb set up is immense but safe to say there is a reason why every tuner goes in the opposite direction.
As everybody likes pictures I have included a couple of my old "Avenger" from the late seventies (one Venturi per cylinder)
I know to our American friends a 1.6 is a motor for a " weed wacker" but you guys don't pay our gas prices

A pair of these on a v8 does about the same as a pair of side draft webbers on a weed whacker.

Check out Murrays Carbs / murrayscarbs.com     I seen this carburetor set up ( custom intake with 2) VM36 Mikunis) on a 81/82 CB750 Custom at a local bike shop. I did not ride it or hear it run. But it did peak my interest..

$700 dollars later, and you could have bought a righteous set of VM or RS carbs.  Why?

Because some people want to spend more money for less performance...!

I don't see the problem with putting twin or single carbs on these bikes. Sure, it won't be the most performant or responsive, but neither are 40+yo bikes. If performance was the only metric, none of us would be here.

I'm always up for seeing someone do something different.
